Dealers......

So I take my 01 Z in for the sticking clutch syndrome and I tell the dealer and mechanic to do the sequential flush of the fluid. Several hours later they call me back to say that this did not fix the problem. First off the clutch very rarely sticks and only does it when the temps outside are really hot and you keep the pedal to the floor . Yesterday the temps were in the low 50's so I don't see how they "duplicated" the problem. Regardless the service rep says that the problem is with the transmission and not the clutch and that I would need to pay $750 fee to have the transmission torn apart to look at it to find the problem. Now I am not a mechanic but I can't think of one way the transmission would keep the pedal from returning from the floor randomly. I told them don't worry about just do the flush. Now it looks like I will be checking the color of the fluids when I get the car home tomorrow.

So I ask you, besides the dealer smoking crack, how in the world would the transmission keep the pedal from returning from the floor? Oh yeah, the pedal will even stick if the car is shut off.

Tom

The slave cylinder could be failing which allows air into the system. The clutch pedal will start sticking to the floor intermittently, before it fails completely. When it does you'll know, as clutch fluid will drain onto the floor. I had this happen with an aftermarket clutch.

A leaking slave is often caused by an out of balance flywheel, sometimes due to improper torquing at the factory. This causes the slave to wobble, which in turn introduces air into the sytem. There is a TSB on this issue for the C5.

Yet another possibility is the clutch fluid contains excess moisture, as it is very hygroscopic. When the fluid heats up it can result in a sticking clutch pedal. The cause is the same as a brake system that has moisture in it which results in a soft pedal, or even none at all. Regular fluid changes can help in this regard.

In any case, the sticking clutch pedal is usually the result of air in the system.

Nope not the same dealer , I did go in today and got more clarification. The guy that called me yesterday is very young and I asked how technically proficient he was with cars and he stated...Not very. The other service rep came out and explained that from the service bulletins that changing the fluid does not necessarily mean it will fix my problem which I already knew. I did state that others have done that and it worked. He stated that there was a service bulletin out for something else dealing with several clutch parts that caused the sticking pedal which I was aware of. I guess the new guy got confused when they explained to him that the clutch and transmission are next to each other :dunno:
