At dealership..steering column recall - service mgr says 5hr/2 day job..wtf??!!

After a dozen recall notices sent to me in the mail from my local dealer, I decided to drop off the 2002 z06 yesterday to have the steering column fixed as directed by the notices.

Just got off the phone with the service manager and he informed me that "this is not an easy recall sir" and can take up to 5 hours or more and my car could be in there until Thu/Fri.

WDF?! how long does this recall fix usually take?

The extra time involved is fixing the things they will screw up that have nothing to do with the recall.

I can have the wheel off, plate removed and reprogrammed in less than an hour. They need the extra time cause they dont know what the hell they are doing.

Its not a recall, its a blunder in the darkness...

Here's a copy of Recall Bulletin ( 30 pages).

http://corvetteforum.net/c5/kenficht...olumn_lock.pdf

Look at page 27. Looks like the Dealer get less than 2 hrs labor.

The Steering wheel has to be removed if it's 6 speed car.

do the column lock by pass kit & throw those recall notices in the trash. i 'm as dumb as a post mechanically but i did my own clb.it's not that hard & you won't have to hassle w/ the dealer.

It's a one hour job. Even for an idiot. Well, maybe a total idiot might need 2 hours. If they think they need 5 hours they've got to be using a Monkey, not a Tech.

Tell your service manager that your vast team of on-line Corvette experts said 5 hours is absurd, and that they should know since they've all had it done already.

Are you experiencing any problem with the steering column lock? I have an '02 also and have not taken it in for two reasons. First, I haven't had any issues with the SCL and second, I can't have the PCM re-flashed because of the S/C tune.

Be aware that there have been reports of other problems popping up when a column lock bypass is installed.

If you're not having problems with it, why fix something that ain't broke?

Charlie

i had no problems w/my '02 either but the way i figure it, it's a crap shoot. it seems [to me anyway] that it's never a convenient place or time when your car breaks down.if there is one thing i can do to keep from getting my baby loaded onto a flatbed then i'm all for it.

Kos, no problem. Mine has been in the shop for 10 days and they think they have it solved.............. A late April Fools! I'd go pick it up and have someone install the bypass kit from Corvettes of Houston. They are full of and you don't need to be the victim. Good luck.
