Had a bout with a Cobra "R" Mustang who wanted to play on the interstate the other day......not a smart move, and I'm old enough to know better, but still too young to care.Anyway, near the end of 4th gear, around 4800rpm's or so,can't be sure, just know I was ready for 5th,when I went to shift to 5th,it felt like the shifter went too far to the right, the next thing was grinding gears. And it sounded like fine mesh gears, too, altho at that speed,it's hard to tell coarse from fine gear grinding.Just did'nt sound like 5th grinding to me.I THINK that the reverse lock-out failed and let the shifter try to go into reverse.......Also since then I have a rattle like a exhaust pipe hanger rattling, altho, when I turn the car off and hit the tail pipe and mufflers, there is no rattle.......hmmmmm.Has anyone had or know of anything or anyone that has had something remotely sounding similar to this??Going to go to the dealer Tuesday and have them inspect the underneath,(can barely get my head under the car),for a loose exhaust hanger.Another thing, since then sometimes reverse is hard to find, does'nt want to go in,and does'nt go all the way in,and then the sound of reverse whining because the gears are just close, but not meshed.........Damn,have I screwed my new car up?Anyone out there who has had a reverse lock-out failure?????????
Yes,Frank, the car is completely stock........wonder what that strange rattle is when I blip the throttle in neutral and the engine rpm's get close to idle.......It could very well be coming from the trannie....yikes.You recommend the ripper?I was going to leave the car stock since they are'nt going to make an excessive amount of these cars

Bro, the Ripper, Kirban, and from what I hear the Hurst are all great shifters. You may be hearing ordinary tranny noise...I hope!!
Sound like a bunch of marbles shaking around in the tranny? If so it is comp. normal. Do a search on trannies and I think you will find alot of info on this problem.
Best of luck with your dealer visit Tuesday. Get that thing strong & healthy. Remember we have a responsibility to show the local boys in their Mustangs & Ricers what its like to run against the Big Dogs.
It sounds like you missed 5th, and ground some of the 5th gearset. That shouldn't be any problem, but don't do it again. The noise, was it there before this? The noise you describe sounds like normal driveline noise. At idle, in neutral, does the noise come and go by pushing in the clutch? If so, that's normal driveline noise. When you first start out, when not using alot of throttle, the rolling marbles noise, that is normal driveline noise. If under hard acceleration you have this noise, then something is wrong. Good luck at the dealer.
You may have just missed 5th, Ive don it once. As for the whole shifter thing, I am completely happy with the stock unit. I think it looks good, performs pretty well, and Im happy with it. Just my opinion

No,the noise I am describing is with the car in neutral, clutch out,and blipping the throttle...when the rpm's get close to idle I get this rattle, like Rick Daniels says....marbles.....did'nt have this before the above mentioned incident...dunno....sounds just like a loose exhaust pipie hanger, but when the car is shut off and i beat the ehaust pipe with my hand.....no noise

An uncompensated endorsement here... Frank was kind enough to let me set his silver Z and try the shifter... A Ripper... I'm sold. After Christmas I'm putting one in. I'm not so sure, you would have to ask others, but I don't believe that putting that shifter in means you have to get rid of the stock shifter. Just put it in a box in the basement

this "bout" with the Cobra "R" went on a 20 mile stretch during which we ran 3 or 4 times.....I just remembered reading posts about the clutch slave fluid not working well when the trannie gets hot........maybe that was it
I took my bone stock 2002 Z06 to the track to see what it would do very early in its life. On the first pass I got wheel hop so bad in first and second that I missed my 2-3 shift. I found a hole that was not 3, 5, or reverse. It was no mans land. I had to muscle it out of that hole and limped across the finish line to a 14.03 at around 85 mph or so. I don't remember the trap speed. I thought for sure that I had broken something but all was ok later. Made a second pass and ran a 12.78 at 111. Took it to MTI the next day and had a Kirban shifter put in. I had the BM Ripper in the last one and did not like how stiff it was. Great shifter and no mystery holes in the shift pattern. Keep the original shifter for your collectible concerns.
