Differential Fluid Q's?

I did a search and am now more confused than I was when I started . I have a few quick questions I hope someone can help me out with. I plan on useing RedLine 75W-90 but how many quarts do I need and will I need the GM Limited-Slip Addative? Thanks in advance!

Thanks but I saw that post in my search and one guy says Redline with GM Limited Slip Addative and the other guy says Redline without. I'm still confused.

Understand ... prolly want to check directly with Red Line.
However, it appears that they offer a product for LS and non LS diffs:
Red Line 75W90 & 75W140 Synthetic Gear Oil
Recommended for most street driven and racing differentials. Excellent performance in conventional and limited-slip units. Also for limited-slip manual transaxles which require a 90 WT oil.

Red Line 75W90NS & 75W140NS (Non-Slip)
Recommended for manual transmissions and non-limited-slip transaxles that recommend 90 W or 140W oils. Can be used in racing limited-slip units to increase lockup and reduce wheel spin. Street-driven rear-wheel drive cars should use regular Red Line 75W90, 75W140 or 80W140.

Red Line Differential Friction Modifier & Break-In Additive
A friction modifier designed to reduce limited-slip noise and to aid the proper break-in of any differential. This can be added to any gear oil to reduce temperature during break-in and prevent gear softening. Replaces manufacturers' limited-slip additives. Can be used to perfectly tune a limited-slip unit.

If you have a 4 oz. container of additive, put it in. It can't hurt.

BTW Sgt. After a rear axle fluid change, it's recommended that you avoid WOT acceleration for a hundred miles or so. The new grease needs a little time to "meld" with the gears.

Diff. Lube

I just had this done on Friday.

Redline 75 - 90

2 Qts. will do it w/ a little left over.

Just use the 75 - 90 as it already has the limited slip additive in it.

75 - 90 NS is a no no unless you want to mix your own additive in which I can't see any reason too.

Warp 10 Always!

Why not just use the GM fluid + friction modifier.
The GM fluid is Texaco 2276 sold only by GM.

Sgt Pyle,
As Denny mentioned, Redline puts out two different types of 75w90, one with the friction modifier pre-mixed in, and one without. Looks like you have the 75w90 which already has friction modifier in it.

Here is what Redline says about adding too much friction modifier: "Limited slip or positraction units will often chatter without use of this product or a gear oil with a similar modifier, so add only enough to eliminate the chatter and avoid making the plates or clutches too slippery. "

Here is what AMSOIL says about friction modifiers in their 75w90 (which also already has friction modifier in it): "If limited slip differential chatter occurs, add AMSOIL Slip-Lock Differential Additive."

At my first few DEs, I used Redline 75w90 and did not add any friction modifier and my diff did not chatter so I didn't add any friction modifier. At the start of the 2004 seasib, I switched to AMSOIL Severe Gear Extreme Pressure Synthetic 75w90, which also has the friction modifier in it, and again my diff didn't chatter so I didn't add any extra friction modifier.

My suggestion to you is to try the Redline 75w90 without the friction modifier. If your diff chatters, then add half a bottle of the friction modifier. If it still chatters, add the rest.

Note: The diff takes just under two quarts of gear lube (1.69 quart according to the service manual).

Note: The service manual does state not to operate at WOT for 300 miles after refilling differential with lubricant and friction modifier. Scoring of the ring and pinion gears may result, leading to differential noise.

It can hurt performance.... it makes the clutches too slipery and they won't engage when you need them...
Chatter is caused by too much friction between the clutches so when the wheels are going at different speeds.. the clutches grab and you get chatter...
