Driver's side rearview mirror - Help!

While backing out of my narrow garage this morning, the dirver's side mirror housing caught on the very edge of my garage door frame. No visible damage to the housing, but the mirror is loose in the housing and has cracked. The power control still moves the mirror but is doesn't have very good control since the mirror has evidently become dislodged from the actuator.

I did a search on the forum regarding broken outside mirrors but didn't find anyone who has had a similar experience. Knowing my luck I'm probably breaking new ground here with a bonehead stunt like this

Can anyone offer any advice on what it may take to fix my mirror? Is this possibly a DIY job?

Meanwhile, I'll try to hold back the tears!

Thanks for the help.

Re: Driver's side rearview mirror - Help!

On my 2500HD, you have to replace the whole mirror assembly/housing. But it's relatively easy by removing 3 screws/bolts and unplugging one connector and reversing for the install. I would look for a used one or a new one from a parts store--just don't use a dealer unless you have lots and lots of extra money. Hopefully, someone will have a better answer for you.

Thanks fcar! I've found a couple of posts that will probably help. When I get a new mirror I'll do a post showing my repair procedure.

Re: Driver's side rearview mirror - Help!

Okay, seems I have same issue. Drivers side mirror (light sensitive) has started to fail in that the light sensing material sandwiched in the glass is seeping downward leaving only about 2/3's of the mirror usable. I have asked my dealer to look at replacing the glass BUT, they recommend replacing the whole housing as they have found that the mirror glass has 3 plastic tabs on the back and can/will break on installation. A new complete housing is $500-$740 depending on where you can get it. The glass only is about $100. I am pissed I'm stuck in this conundrum. I have even asked a different body shop and same answer. Really, glass breaks or fails and I have to spend close to a thousand bucks(housing, shipping, paint) before I even install it? Anybody got any good news?
Thanks in advance.

The good news is that if you had a Toyota Yaris, Ford Festiva, or Chevy Aveo the mirrors would be much less to replace.

Sorry to say, welcome to the world of GMomics. Freaking parts are ridiculous to say the least.

Keep your eye out (on the other forum) for a car being parted out. They are being listed all the time. Good Luck!

Re: Driver's side rearview mirror - Help!

OK, I have done quite a bit of searching for a replacement mirror for my Z06. Since my car has the "super deluxe" version (memory, heated and electrochomic light-sensing), there will be mucho dollars involved. I have not yet seen a used assembly that has all 3 features.

While searching, I found a company that offers a replacement mirror that has a turn signal built into the mirror glass (you guys probably know who this is). I am intrigued by the extra margin of safety this mod would add. I could replace both my outside mirrors for the turn signal mod and actually save money by not going for the cost of replacing the original mirror.

So, what say you--safety or originality?

Norman, you mean you just replaced the damaged mirror, or went for the turn signal mod?

Re: Driver's side rearview mirror - Help!

After a long and difficult search, I found a whole driver's side mirror and housing assembly from a sports car salvage dealer here in Ohio. Here's the finished product

The removal and replacement of the mirror assembly was not all that difficult. I had to repair 2 door panel pins using JB Kwik Weld, and that worked great. I suppose I could have purchased the replacement auto-dimming, heated mirror glass and a new actuator motor (which was broken, too), and then attempted a replacement of those components in my existing housing, but I was concerned about breaking the mirror during removal/replacement.

Feels good to have her back together and working properly, but it was an expensive mistake! Oh well.....
