Engine clicking - and backfiring at lower RPM...ideas?

Car was at the track this weekend and ran great up until Sunday when the SES started flashing (P0300) and engine started backfiring. It sounded nasty.

Pulled into the pits and let the engine idle - sounds fine except for a clicking that sounds like it's coming from the head...car has race cam, dual springs, hardened pushrods, Ti retainers, and full roller rockers. Stock lifters, stock heads, stock valves. Never revved past 7000. Most likely not a pushrod (I've heard that before and it sounds different).

Ideas?

Could be a valve spring...I'd pull the valve cover just to be sure.

Sounds as though a valve might have made contact with a piston for what ever reason. Like Case said, could be a broken spring. You need to pull the valve covers and if you don't see a broken spring, run a compression check.

Possible collapsed lifter...Those duel springs apply alot of force through the valvetrain...

Peace...Gman

Not yet, GR8. I'm having AAA come tomorrow to take it to CAM in Durham to get it figured out. I'm fairly certain it's a hardware problem.

Sounds like it could be spark plug related. Check all plugs to see if they are mounted properly. If so pull all to see if they are ok. JUST MY OPINION. Seen it before. Dr.Bigg

I agree - check the plugs first. A P0300 code (misfire) is usually caused by an ignition problem. Check the wires for burn marks and proper seating, and check the coil packs. Burnt spark plug wires are common with certain brands of headers that have close contact.

The clicking sound you are hearing could be electricity arcing when the coil fires, and the spark is ending up somewhere outside of the engine instead of being delivered to the plug.

I'm fairly sure it's mechanical, but who knows! I will know by next week probably. I have heat sleeves over my wires and they all seemed tight and snug.

I'll keep you guys posted for sure. Thanks for all the comments.

I haven't heard your noise, but the symptoms are pretty much valvetrain. Maybe rocker, valvespring, bent valve?

Sorry to hear it's wounded.

Paul! I haven't heard from you in so long. How are you buddy?!?

'tis okay that she's wounded. "If you wanna play, you gotta pay." Chevy designs 'em good. I just took her a bit too far (or maybe was the victim of a weak part). CAM will sort it out for me! Man do I love my Z

I would guess a valve spring. A scan toll should tell what cylinder(s) are mis-firing and that should pinpoint the cylinder with the problem. Usually you'll get some reversion from the "bad cylinder" which will cause a second cylinder to skip also. Good luck and let us know what they find.

Baron, another person I haven't seen in a while. How ya doin'?

There is no engine code - that's the strange thing about this. I look forward to hearing what they find also.

I broke two valve springs in my old motor...the car never threw a code. The only way we knew was the miss and the noise it was making. Pulled the valve covers and sure enough...broken spring.
