I was coming back from relatives when it died... $500.00 tow truck ride back to town (3.5 hours away).
I'm trying to figure out what it is... I think it may be an intake gasket.
I pulled out to pass, I was in 4th gear, hammer down at about 5000 RPM when suddenly power dropped off and the car sounded like it was a diesel with the jake brakes on... sounded like the regular "decel" noise but loud and booming.
The car would not start after for more than a few seconds. I thought it was fuel because it was would run rough for about 2 or 3 seconds before stalling out (sounded similar to when I bled the fuel lines when changing injectors). Fuel pump turns on and I know it's getting fuel because it will start for a moment.
I don't think it's a valve or spring because there is no bad metalic sounds.
Anyone ever have this problem?
Car has 37,000 miles on it... most of them hard.

I would think if you were to look at codes on the DIC you would find more than you care to think about and yet the problem could be something small. Keep us up to date on your situation.

We pulled the valve covers off. I dropped a valve on the bank 1 (drivers side, front-most)... the spring snapped in half.
Its the first valve (the front most) is that the intake or the xhaust... I don't have the head off yet..
Sorry to hear about your problems Zed. That's a real bummer as we use to say. I hope there is not too much damage and maybe you can get by with just a new spring.
BTW, do you have stock cam and valve springs?

Yup... stock... I haven't had the head off yet, but the stem is way down there... found the retianers and spring parts (they were still up top). I have about 37,000 high reving miles... I guess heat, high revs and milage add up quickly on those springs... we have an agressive valvetrain stock.
I'm thinking of forging everything now that I have to do this much. I'm assuming probably correctly that the piston is damaged it let go at 5,000 or 5,500 in 4th (I was passing someone).
Wow, that sux Zed. Hope you get it fixed quickly and painlessly.
I'm pretty upset about it... I'm mostly broke at the moment to which sucks... probably be 3 or 4 months before I get another big check and I had different ideas about that check than rebuilding an engine... thats the way it goes I guess.
Here's a pessimistic questions: Is there designed-in clearance between an 'all the way down valve' and an 'all the way up piston'? For a lot of engines, dropping a valve usually means metal hitting metal.

I dropped a valve in a big block back in the '70s. It ended up going through the cylinder wall and made a hole about the size of a 50-cent coin - it was not pretty.
I hope you have better luck Zed.

A valve spring should last well past 37,00 miles even if they are hard driving miles. I don't know what mods you have, but sometimes manufactures pay a percentage of repairs if a problem occurs just past the warrenty period. I would contact GM about this. They may not pay anything, but it is worth a shot in my opinion. Sorry, to hear about your problems and I hope they are not as bad as you think.
I've followed all those threads when you posted them and said to myself "I won't have those problems, because I don't race"... should have knocked on wood.

That's why I share them. While I still think the LS6 is a great motor, it isn't indestructable and I believe many of us drive them as if you were on a track much of the time...
Hoepfully the inside of your motor won't be too bad. When I broke my timing chain earlier this year, I didn't lose any pistons, only six valves.
Good luck.

When my timing chain broke I had six valves contact their respective pistons, some intake, some exhaust, so pretty sure the answer to that is there is no clearance.
