Engine noise - not the typical noise

I'm beginning to think my 'new' Z doesn't like me. I know these cars make a lot of valvetrain noise, and I know what that sounds like. I know some of them have pretty bad piston slap when cold. But there is a noise that seems (to me) to be getting louder and louder.

The noise isn't present when the engine is cold. It starts to do it only after warming up. Now, I have the typical valvetrain noise, but I'm getting a knocking noise in tandem with the valvetrain noise. It seems to directly coincide with the valvetrain noise, they exist at the same engine load and rpm range. I don't mind the typical valvetrain noise, but this other noise really bothers me. I'll probably take it in and let a dealer look at it (under warranty), but I wanted to see if anyone here had experienced this.

It does it at light loads from around 1900 rpm up to maybe 2400 rpm. It also does it with no load, trans in neutral. Once again, its not the typical 'sewing machine' noise. Its much louder and more of a knocking sound. Any input?

Sounds like piston slap to me. Don't hear when the engine is stone cold then as it starts to warm up it sounds like a deep hollow knock. After 5 minutes or so it dissappears.

Most common complaint on LSX engines.

No, it never goes away once warmed up. It does sound like piston slap, but it would/should go away once fully warmed up if thats what it is.

Maybe this noise is common, but I've never heard any LSx engine make this particular noise.

Well, I notice on mine that there seems to be a transition from a "knock" to a "tick". It sounds funny, I know. They are both in cadence with one another and it use to drive me crazy until I learned to live with it.

I started a poll on "Does Your Engine tick" and I was surprised at the results. It seems 81% of Z owners have the tick.

Poll: Does your 02 or newer engine tick?

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't worry about it too much, but for a piece of mind, take it to a dealer and have him listen to it.

Thanks. I know the majority do have the tick, but this is really not sounding good. I'll have to wait until the warranty transfer is complete then take it in to a dealer. Maybe its nothing. I guess it could even be some piston slap, but I just think its odd that it gets worse after warming up. With this being an early '01, I'm thinking maybe it needs the oil pump o-ring replaced.

Well, good luck with it and hope it isn't nothing serious. That can sure take the joy out of owning a great car like the Z06.

Question: Is the noise still present with the car in gear and the clutch depressed or only in neutral with the clutch out?

.

Go to this site and click PISTON SALAP it sounds like a diesel engine . If it's bad take it in and have it checked and if they tell you it's normal make sure it is noted on the service receipt they give you and then put it in a vault it could be worth an engine down the road if disaster strikes

Actually, the noise is present either way.
