Help with new (wierd) noises =(

I've got two new noises commnig from my drive-train. One has been kind of on-going and the other is far more pronounced since my trip to the drags this past weekend.

1. I have a sort of clunk from the rightish rear end.

- It seems to happen right in the morning when I'm driving down my street. Also, it happens when I shift the weight of the care sometimes... i.e. when I apply the brakes. The problem is that it's so intermitent that it's hard to diagnose.

Is "the clunk" a common problem that people have like column lock etc?

2. Since my escapades at the drags last weekend (on street tires) there's an increase in what sounds like a gear whine from the rear end.

- I fully understand how noisy the drive-trains of these cars are esp. with the lack of sound deadening insulation, but the change in noise is what bugs me.

The noise only happens when the car is under slight load, heavy load the exhaust is too loud, and when I let off the gas the noise stops. It gets louder the faster I seem to go.

** I can't fully tell if it's the rear or the clutch b/c the noise just comes from the "drivetrain" in general. The car is under warranty so I may just beat on it until the noise gets bad then take her in.

Any ideas would be great :smash:

Brian,
1. What kind of sway bar endlinks do you have? Are you still stock? My T1 sway bars endlinks creak and groan all the time.
I have also read a few posts about greasing the drive shaft splines inside the rear wheel hubs fixing some sort of noise back there.

2. Haven't experienced or read about too many abnormal gear whines. Sorry. Good luck sorting it out.

Well per the other forum I think I've figured out the clunk. It's a semi-common thing and seems to be the sheet metal behind the right passenger seat. I'm also going to check the sway bar.

As for the whine... it's gotten louder and really sounds like the clutch area. My buddy has a 400rwhp 300Z TT that makes the same noises but worse and he swears it the throwout bearing in the clutch.. The noise is definately sounding like more from the front now.

Mine clinks like this.. especially under weight load shifts. It sounds like the top of sealed can of something popping.

Brian,
There are several TSBs out on the clutch. Maybe you will get lucky and find that is what it is. I replaced my whole clutch, including the throw out bearing earlier this year when I had the motor out for the timing chain failure.
