Help...temp Gauge All Over The Place

I have a 02 Z with just under 25K miles on it. My daily commute is 4 miles. Over the past couple weeks my water temp gauge has been all over the place on readings, as has my heads up display gauge. The in dash gauge has been bouncing around from 210 up to 240 while the hud has been going from 4 bars all the way up to full bars. Sometimes they are in unison with each other and sometimes one will be high while the other low. This is all happening during my 10 min ride to work in the morning and on the way home at night. Please advise on if this may just be a thermostat or something more serious. Thanks

Is the change rapid in movement or slow?

If it's rapid it might be the sending unit located on the left head. If it's slow, it could be the thermostat which is not very hard to change.

Probably best to have a qualified tech check it out.

Thanks. The moves are more towards rapid then slow. They seem to run up to the 235 - 240 area when I first get on the throttle and fall back to 210 - 215 when I come to a stop. After that the changes in temp arent quite as rapid but are still there.

Re: Help...temp Gauge All Over The Place

There was a guy in our Corvette club that was complaining of fluctuating temps as well as temps being very high. Turned out his radiator was dirty and not flowing air. He took compressed air to it and it's all better.

Make sure the coolant level is ok if you haven't. An air bubble/pocket could do that, too.

It is fairly normal to see temps up around 230 while sitting in traffic for a good while. One of the fans kick on to high speed at around 235 area.

Re: Help...temp Gauge All Over The Place

Thanks for the help. I ended up installing a 160 tstat, flushed the system, and refilled with new DexCool. Also took the time to clean the radiatior and couldnt believe how much junk was up there. Looked like a giant birds nest in my garage after i was done. Car now humming at 194, touched 198 in traffic yesterday.
