Anyone know of a fine finished enclosure and a great head unit that isn't to godie? I just bought the car and the audio system is crappy.

JL Audio makes a stealth box that fits in the center storage bin in the rear. They sell for $500+ I've got an extra for $250 It contains one 10'' JL 10w3 300 watt subwoofer. Black carpet. It is molded fiberglass, and fits perfectly. It does not stick out above the rear deck. It is about 6 months old, but was only used in the car for 2 months.

How hard does it hit with one 10"?

I installed an Alpine 7998 in mine which is a nice head unit. I also had an Alpine amp and Boston speakers installed. I might be selling the head unit if your're interested. It depends on whether I can get a decent price on a 7990. I'll let yer know if I'm selling. Yer right though, the hifi is awful in the Vette. Really bad.

First of all, I hardly ever listen to the audio system in the Z. Who needs to when the engine makes that magnificant sound?

I've also soured on aftermarket systems mainly because it's an excuse for someone to break into your car. I had a car that I was letting a buddy use while his car was in the shop. His car was bright red and a very high profile car at the time (Dodge Stealth RT/TT, yet because of his stock audio system, nobody ever touched it. When I let my friend borrow my car, it had a modest little stereo with an amp and a Alpine head unit. He parked my car in the same spot that he had parked his car in for over 2 years without any problems and after the second night, my car got broken into for the radio. The theives made a real mess of my car. The audio system was the least of my worries.

Anyway.. Just my opinion about aftermarket systems.

Haha, "decent price" and "Alpine 7990" don't even belong in the same sentence.

Why cant anyone make a good din and half unit to fit into the dash? I really dont care for the way it looks with the dash adapter. At least the ones I have see on other vehicles.

Alpine used to, but they stopped making the 855's and 857's.

Because the DIN size is more universal. The DIN and a half is only for GM and Chrysler, so the sales numbers simply wouldn't support a top of the line DIN and a half unit.

Correct, I think only Pioneer still makes a 1.5 din, they can afford to do it unlike most manufacturers. Pioneer is loaded.

The Pioneer units are about the best DIN and a half units that I've seen. You still aren't going to get state of the art unless you go to a DIN unit.

FYI.. Some kits to convert the DIN to DIN and a half aren't bad. I wish that I could remember the name of mine. I have a really cool flush mount unit in my winter beater. I have a DIN size Eclipse head unit in another GM car and I like the looks of it. Some kits are hideous though, namely the one that Crutchfield sells. I don't like the kits that bulge out.
