I just picked mine up last week. Its a brand new Quicksilver 02. I really like it, it very nice to drive and its pretty damn quick!
I'm coming over from the darkside, as I've had 3 late model Porsches (and an old one)... when comparing alternatives to my 2001 996 Turbo a good friend of mine turned me to the Z06, it had impressive stats (as good some better than the turbo) at less than half the cost... I've been reading this site for about two months... you guys like your cars and were not having many problems with them... all the same after driving Germany's best I was sceptical how anything could compare handling wise, so on a biz trip to Dallas I rented a Z06... all I can say is what a car, handle impressively, brakes are excellent and it takes off like a bat outa hell... I'm now very happy to be sitting behind the wheel of a Vette.
I do have a small issue though and have already received my first "non-answer" from Chev.. I even have a case number now with their support department....
Here's the problem:
I have a high pitch rattle... sounds almost like a whistle or really small keys rattling when coming off of the throttle or when I blip the throttle... the Chev dealer here took off all the exhaust and said it was none of those parts, and that it appeared to be the engine, so they called Chev... the boys in Chev's tech department said they had a few other clients in the US and Canada with the same problem and that they were working on a fix, but not to worry about it as the noise does not affect performance (ok... thats good, but it still rattles! hehehe).
Welcome to the forum and to owning a Z. The rattle you're talking about is probably the inherent (to '02s anyway) exhaust rattle that has been hashed and rehashed on this forum a hundred times. A recent thread even went so far as to pinpoint a likely cause (sorry, I forget the name of the or else I'd give you some keywords to search on; maybe someone else can help Seth here?). The general consensus is that a fix is forthcoming (how soon, who knows) from GM (probably in the form of a recall). The other option is to inxtall an X-pipe, which other forum members have reported eliminates the rattle. I think perhaps your dealer either isn't privy to this condition or took the exhaust apart just to appease you. From the sound (no pun intended ) of what you're describing, I'd say it's the common exhaust rattle many of us have experienced, including me.
If I'm not mistaken, I think forum member Biglawman has done extensive research on this irritating little problem. You might consider messaging him or paging him via a new thread for further details. Good luck and congrats again on your new Z. I know from experience that you're going to love it.
Zed I rattle my z cage all day, but I kind of suspect its our titanium exhaust system which by being so lite and strong shivers a bit when you thrust it at the beginning but I really think its the nature in the beast sort of say, on another note what a coincidence that my licence plate is ZED Z06 not because its my name but soon I will post a picture of who Zed is and I hope like !it trust me . keep us posted please on your case as I think we are all curious as what the culprit is on this one.
I TOOK UP BADLAWMAN'S RECOMMENDATION AFTER EXTENSIVE RESEARCH INTO THE CAUSE OF THE RATTLE AND INSTALLED THE "X" PIPE WHICH DID ELIMINATE THE JINGLE. I ALSO CAME FROM A 2000 PORSCHE 996 AND LOVE THIS VETTE. THE INSTALLATION OF THE "X" PIPE WILL CHANGE THE SOUND OF THE EXHAUST TO A DIFFERENT PITCH AND LESS GROWL. SOME THINK IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE THE FERRARI. I MUST SAY THAT I AM NOT SURE IF I LIKE IT OR NOT AND HAVE KEPT MY "H" PIPE SO THAT WHEN THE "FIX" IS ANNOUNCED BY GM, I HAVE THE OPTION OF RE INSTALLING THE H PIPE AND GETTING THE FIX OR KEEPING THE X PIPE AND CHANGING MY EXHAUST SYSTEM TO REGAIN SOME OF THE POPPING SOUND THAT I LOVED SO MUCH! BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR NEW Z06!
Seems that this is a fairly common issue then... I won't worry about it... The X pipe sounds interesting, but I don't really want to loose the back-farting when I pull my foot off the gas... I think its a required feature for 350's...
Appart from solving the jangle issue, does the X-pipe provide any additional power?
p.s. I called myself Zed, because up here in Canada we pronounce the name of the car as a ZED 06... same with 300-ZED-X's and ZED-28's etc... hehehe (perhaps I'm biased, but they all sound better as ZED than ZEE? hehehe).
If you want to retain the factory H-pipe and eliminate the jingle, take the Z to an exhaust shop and have them take off the H-pipe, and just cut 1/2 to 3/4" off of the factory hangers where the H is and reweld the hangers back on. This will cure the incessant rattle that can begin to drive you batty. I had it done and it works fine. I bought a weld in X-Pipe from Xtreme and had them do this when they put it in. Fixed the problem. It is probably already mentioned above, but the rattle is caused by the fact the factory hangers are too long, or the springs which they hang from are too long, and the springs are not under tension, hence they rattle around. Lift your car up and look at the springs, if you have the rattle, your springs won't be under tension. This is your problem.

Zed was my dog he is a Tennesse rednose pitbull that I loved dearly and miss him a great deal and in his memory to me, is revived in me, by the tenacity and balls that my Z06 has so much of that reminds me of him hence the name of my car!
