I Want to swap cams BUT it must idle close to stock. Any suggestions?

Lots of cam choices so I'd like to get some opinions from people who have done it. Max power isn't my goal but a nice bump in power while maintaining driveability and idle quality is priority.

How long does it take for a cam swap anyway?

Thanks a ton!

Joe

Call MTI or someone and ask them about doing a custom grind on a 116 LSA....wouldn't even know it was there

I would recommend the Katech Stage I cam that goes with the Stage II head and cam package. The Stage II cam may be a little wild for your needs. Call Katech and ask for Chris.

I had asked Chris and this is what he said.

"you would want to have a cam around the 224 @ .050" range and keep the lift at about ..570-.575". I would also keep the lobe sep. around 114-116, this will give you a good idle quality"

I have talked to others who said,

"No way a cam with 224 duration would idle smooth. For good idle quality, I would look no more than 218 duration."

I have an associated question
Are you H&C guys using roller rockers? If not, why not?

Do you mean aftermarket rocker arms (1.8 ratio)?

Yes aftermarket... there is some fine equipment available...Who has upgraded to aftermarket roller rockers? Is it worth the added cost?

CRUZMISL - I guess it matters how close to a stock idle you really want. The 224 will give you a noticeable lump but it is not that wild. Especially if you turn the idle up, this will take some of the lump out of it and smooth it out. On a 114 or 116 it will have good idle quality for that size cam. Also you could get it with 222 @ .050 witch will also help out. The 218 cam will not give you that much of a increase, at least not enough for me to go through a cam swap in a Vette if it was my car. I will be glad to help you with this choice and discuss this further if you would like. Just give me a call.

Thanks,

Does the head/cam swap void GM warranty? Your package makes some serious power. I would love to do it, but want to keep my warranty.... at least a while longer

Thanks

tdzee - It matters how close of a relationship you have with your service manager at the Chevrolet dealer. In most cases it does void the warranty or at least most of it.

Which is why I'm waiting until next year lol
I expect that it will eventually happen. But then again Katech comes with a warranty I believe.

Chris,

With stock heads what is the expected RWHP improvement with the 224 cam that you mention? And what is the cost?

Thanks in Advance

Les
