Interesting info. from Chevy dealer today
Also, up date on '03 steering colum not locking.
Took the Z into the dealer this AM for "Service Colum Lock" message on the DIC.
During the trouble shooting we discovered that the BCM in my car was not programed for a Z06!! It was programed for telescoping steering colum, manual HVAC controls, Active handleing for a coup or vert (there is a differance) and a ride damping mode that I have forgotten the name of. (Not magnetic ride control)
We also discovered (after calling the GM techs back east) that the BCM's in the '03's are programed to lock out (in the unlock position) the steering colum lock mechanism if the BCM detects a fault within that system. And, according to the GM tech., the BCM will not store a code for this lock out!!!!!! So, when you check the DIC for codes when this happens, there are no codes!!!!
The GM techs say that the motor that operates the steering lock must have failed once which caused the message to be displayed and stopped the steering lock from operating.
The dealer tech reset the BCM by desconnecting the battery cables, and now the colum lock works as it is supposed to, and will continue to do so until the BCM sees another fault, at which time the whole senerio starts all over again.
So, there is a motor on order and will be installed when it arrives.
The GM tech said the motor is the most common problem when the BCM sees a fault in this system. The GM tech maintanes that these motors will work intermitently when they start to go bad.
The dealer tech also verified all the circuits, both positve and negative, were working correctly.
The way the dealer tech discovered that the BCM was not progrmed for a Z06, was the program he was reading on his electronic diagnostic equipment did not match the program that is written on the tag on the inside of the glove box door. He reprogramed the BCM to match the Z06 specs.
The next time you have your Z into a dealer you might ask them to check and compare the program in your BCM to the one on your glove box door.
