iPod Nano Installed - Pics - How To

I got my new iPod Nano in the car last night. I snapped a few pics during the process so hopefully it can help anyone else wishing to do the install.

The interface is a Peripheral interface. When I bought the interface it came with a short(12" Long) adapter cable for the Vette. Unfortunately I don't believe the Z06's have pre-run cables to the trunk. This wasn't a big deal for me as I just cut one end of the plug off(Keeping the end that plugs into the Peripheral unit) and hardwired it to the 2 port plugs found in the passenger kickpanel/footwell.

Step 1:

Take out your footwell panel and your passenger kick panel/door sill.

Step 2:

Locate the 2 port plugs that you need to tap into. Optionally you can buy a harness that actually plugs into these plugs but, I believe it's about $40 or so and then you are left with about a 10 ft. clump of wires and nowhere to run them.

You can solder or use what I call the poke and wrap method. Which is where you cut out about a 3/4" piece of insulation, poke the wire with a test light to open it and then thread the wire through, close it and wrap the wire around and tape it up.

Here is a pic of the 2 plugs you are looking for:

Use this as your guide as to what colors from the Peripheral harness go to what colors on the port plugs.

Plug 1:
White to Connector Brown+White
Red to Connector Green+White
Orange to Connector Black+White

Plug 2:
Blue to Black Connector thick Orange
Brown to Black Connector Black+White
Black (smaller gauge wire) to Connector Dark Green

Step 3:

Remove your ashtray.(Hopefully you smokers don't smoke in the Vette) Take the plug that plugs the iPod into the interface and run it through the hole behind where the ashtray was. Peel back the carpet so you can see the wire and pull it through.

Step 4:

Find location for Peripheral interface. I mounted mine above the fat harness pictured below. It's a pretty tight fit but, I held it up with a few wire ties as well. Plug all your plugs into the unit before mounting. Making sure of course to wire tie all your wires nice and neatly and out of the way.

Step 5:

Double check all your connections and close everything up.

Step 6:

Plug in your iPod and enjoy

Half Open...

Fully Open...

Fully closed WITH iPod Nano inside!

iPod Nano in hand...

Keep in mind that the iPod Nano is tiny. If you have a different iPod you will likely need to choose a different mounting location like the armrest, glove box, etc.

Miguel,

Great job and GREAT writeup

Just a suggestion, drive your Z around with both windows rolled up and stereo off; listen for any new squeaks or rattles.

When I initially stuffed the Peripheral adapter box up above the passenger footwell area in my Z, I ended up with a new squeak (caused by the adapter box rubbing up against some plastic wiring harnesses).

What I did was bought some thin black foam/mesh (air filter) material at Home Depot for like 2 bux and wrapped the adapter box and the excess cabling bundles in this foam/mesh material which eliminated the squeak/rattles...

Again, great job and that Nano is sick

Great write up. I've been wondering how to directly hook up an aux unit. Can you tap into the same wires with a cable running to a headphone jack? That way you can plug and play with any device.

A headphone jack would just be an output. You need a device to power whatever unit you are using and have it interfaced to you factory stereo. I know they make alot of different types of system such as RF Modulators, etc. but, not sure about the quality of sound or compatability with other systems.

Alabama,

Check with: http://www.litewarehouse.com/
(click on the Audio Adapters category in the upper left corner of the page)

They sell this:

https://www.litewarehouse.com/catalo...roducts_id=221

which will allow you to connect any mp3 player into the factory stereo system via the AUX input. However, as Miguel has pointed out, this will only feed audio into the factory stereo; it will not provide power to your mp3 player nor will it allow you to control your mp3 player from the factory head unit...this way, you're not limited to using an Apple iPod!!

Not sure about the shuffle but, I'm pretty certain it will work with any iPod that has a dock connector.

What kind of control do you have over the ipod? Can you change play lists? turn shuffle on and off?

LarryW, thanks for the info. That's exactly what I'm looking for. I want to have a headphone jack to hook directly into the aux input, but didn't know they made an adapter. I want to be able to hook up anyone's ipod, mp3 player whatever without using a FM mod. Again, thanks.
