Magnetic Ride Control

Has anyone had the chance to put this (Magnetic Ride Control) on their 02 z06, is it even possible. Any information on this would be great, i was looking into buying the entire setup.

link to some specs on the ride control

Or should i just stay simple and get some bilstiens?

Thanks

I believe its going to be very expensive to upgrade to the mag ride suspension, not sure if it possible or not.

Have you considered the 04 Z06 shocks? Do a search and you will find plenty of threads on them.

I gotta think that, if the MR was that much better, Chevy would have popped it onto the Z already. Remember, the C5 and Z suspensions are mechanically *very* similar but spring rates, rolls bars, alignment and wheel weight are all different.

MR is tuned for the non-Z06 configuration. And since the C5 suspension with MR isn't better than the Z06's suspension without MR, C5 tuned MR on a Z06 could easily be a handling "downgrade".

Intersting point. I was under the assumption that it would work well with the Z06. It seems like when i push the car hard and let off the gas, it sways from the engine torquing back from a full throttle respose, and with that engine momentum I get unstable. I am looking for something that will negate that effect, do you think that with just 04 z06 shocks I will be better in that respect.

GM was rumored to have a retrofit for the F45 owners to go F55 at a costs of approximately 2900 dollars..

I don't remember what the details were or what pieces of the F45 were reused..

I don't for sure if going F55 but it most probably would be even more expensive..

Go with the 2004 Z06 shocks..

That would most probably @ 328 dollars..plus installation..be a better way to go.

Good luck

When I was in Nashville for the 50th I think at one of the GM displays there was a sign up poll asking if anyone was interested in the MR for older model year C5's. Sounded like there were thinking about that as an after market item.

Good info, I wonder if they ever went into production of that retrofit kit. I spoke to a friend at Chevy, he said he could order me a set of 2004 shocks for 71 dollars a corner. I was just going to put them in myself, but would I void my warrentee by doing so. Btw you guys are great, thanks for all the helpfull info. One last thing, have you guys had the same problem as me when letting off at high speeds. Have those with 04 shocks noticed this probelm disappear after the install.

What you're describing sounds similar to the floating sensation the '04 shocks are supposed to cure. Usually, it's encountered during directional changes coupled with bumps and pavement elevation changes, iirc, but there's no reason you might not be feeling the same thing. It seems to be a characteristic of pre-'04 Z's, not just '02's.

If you're even remotely considering mag ride, driving some mag ride cars might be a place to start. It's entirely possible they may have the same problem.

Not too much help, I'm afraid, but at least it'll get your post bttt.

Thanks for giving the post some life, and riding in a mag ride control car would be an awesome place to start, I just dont think that anyone would let me push their 04 like I push my car. Anyone here that has put on 04 shocks and noticed this problem go away. Thanks again for all the help guys.

Its hard to totally understand what suspension issue your describing. I would recommend the Z06 '04 shocks for the ability to better keep the tires in contact with the road during mid corner bumps.

When you have the shocks installed have your alignment done by a very reputable shop that has had the equipment serviced somewhat recently.

(could be your alignment)

I personally chose to have the shocks installed by a GM tech to perserve the lifetime warranty..(and I'm lazy! )

Better to pay them and have the alignment done by them too. JMO (have the tech check the bushings at the same time?)

MY best guess..an alignment issue

It's probably worth mentioning that if you decide to change the shocks and have it aligned, that's the perfect time to lower the car (if you want to)- either by doing it yourself or having someone else do it. Otherwise, it'd have to be aligned again.

I concur with having a GM tech do it, if possible. Try a high-volume vette dealer; some have techs that specialize. Someone in VA may have some ideas.

If you decide not to replace anything, I'd suggest at least putting the car on a rack and checking all the suspension and shock mountings and the shocks themselves (although they can fail in ways that are undetectable visually). Some connections have been, or worked, loose. No point in taking chances.

Go with the 04 shocks you will not believe the difference....The F 55 is a waste of $$. It is for folks who want a vette to ride like a Caddy...04 Z06 has the best factory suspension ever put on a Corvette
