Need advice, Is a stroker the right option for me? (warning long post)
I've had my Z and my H/C since 03 and I love it, but after 6 years I'm feeling the need for a little more power. I started another thread on adding a Fast 92 intake, but based on the input it doesn't seem like it will give me much bang for the buck, so I'm stepping back and looking at all the all the options before I do anything.
I could move up to a C6Z. I assume a lot of people with C5Z's think about this option. Good power and a lot more torque. The problem is even with the fantastic deals out there on new Z's it would still cost me 30k+ and that's not in the budget right now. I could go used, but I still would have to come up serious cash. Then the mod bug would come visit me and that's even more $$$. So unless I win the Lottery I have to rule this option out.
That means I keep my 03Z and add more hp. 500hp to 525hp is my target. I don't have a set budget for this progect, but I do need to be practical about how much I put into it. It makes no sense to me to spend 8k to 10k on my all ready modded 03 that's worth 20 something.
A blower or a turbo would be fun. Lots of power, but I'd have to start all over. I can't imagine my current cam and high compression heads would work well with boost, so in addition to the power adder I'd have to replace those parts as well (not to mention the stock bottom end I'd still have). Because of this I don't think adding boost fits my requirement of keeping the $$$ practical, so this option looks to be out also.
A NOS system would work. A 75hp to 100hp shot gets me to my goal. I like NOS, I've done NOS on several cars and even on drag boats in the past. Fits with the $$$. I do kind of want the power all the time though and I hate to fill up the bottle all the time. I guess its an option to consider, but it really doesn't excite me.
That leaves me with adding cubic inches. With all the hot rodding I've done over the years I've never had a stroker motor, so that would be fun and different. It would get me the power I want. I've been reading a lot of posts on stroking, but there are so many options on different bore and stroke combination's it's kind of confusing. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what is best. I'm also at a loss on the cost side of it, certainly something like a C5R block 427 not an option, but what about a 383? Would I keep my block an buy a new rotating assembly? To keep cost down I think I would want to use my AFR 205 heads and G5X3 cam, would that work? I see a couple of people have used LME, maybe I should sell my 10,000 mi short block and just replace it with something bigger. Other than a new tune that seems to be a pretty simple solution. What does a new stroker short block go for and who are the vendors I should look at?
Those of you that have been down this road please point me in the right direction.

I went with a 383 in my Z and a 402 in my Silverado. If I did it again I would 402 both. I love the power and with the mild cam, it is a great street or track motor. Both are very fast and will cruise down the freeway at 65 mph, nice and smooth.

Just stroke except for the overbore of 5-10 thousandths. Both have 4.00" stroke crank. Different pistons.
If you heard my 402 idling, you would laugh at me if I told you it runs 11.1 quarter mile. I just bought a basic TS 11:0 compression short block, upgraded the rings and got ARP bolts. Then took some AFR's and a Fast and got Pete Incaudo to do his majic and design me a cam to go with the weight and stall I was using. My goal was a street truck that would run high 11's and I am knocking on tens door.
I need to transplant that motor to my Z.

NOS is the fast and cheap way. We ran it on our Silverado for awhile...lost of fun but if you want full time power and gobs of torque, you will love a Stroker.

Guess you're kinda new around here right
I'm in OP with a 418ci LS3 forged motor that I installed myself, Norman has a twin-turbo C5 in Lee's Summit that he worked on himself and he has a C6, Mike has a shop queen that you can look at at MC Racing - 900hp C5 but it doesn't see daylight much Mike also has a C6. Terry has a C6. Sounds like we need a get together!!!
Superior Chevrolet also sells Callaway Corvettes if you are thinking C6.

You can do a basic 416/418 LS3 stroker short block for 5-6k depending on the internals you opt for,,,,,I love mine and I know Paul is pretty happy with his too. Take Paul up on his offer and go for a ride with him.

Let me know when you want a ride.....
Paul.
Hey Paul, I live in OP also. I would love to take a look at your car, I'll send you a PM with my phone number.

Bill and I drove each others' cars today.... My clutch release point being near the floor and his being near the top was the biggest obstacle for both of us to get used to along with the BPP vs. Hurst shifters.
Hopefully we have a new member interested in going to the fest this year!
I think Bill might be building a NA monster soon.....stay tuned..

Yes!!
I'll bet you a dollar that if you go over to MCRacing right this minute, you will see my C5Z sitting "in the daylight" soaking up rays just outside the dyno bay.
It doesn't go back inside until closing time!
