NEW TSB for new pistons for LS1 engines built AFTER April 2001?!

Thanks to C5-TECH's post on the other forum:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Engine Knock on Startup (including Hot Re-Starts) on LS1 V8 Engine #PI00150 - (02/12/2003)
Engine Knock on Startup (including Hot Re-starts) on LS1 V8 Engine
.

When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.

Condition/Concern:
Engine knock on startup (including hot re-starts) on LS1 V8 engines built after April of 2001

Recommendation/Instructions:
Determine if a piston is making the noise by shorting out the fuel injectors to individual cylinders. After determining which cylinders are the source of the knock noise (90% of the time it should be #1) eight standard size pistons may be ordered through SPO.

These pistons should be measured with the largest piston going in the noisy bore, and the next largest going into #1 bore and #8 bore, in that order. If measuring equipment is unavailable, most machine shops should have the capability of determining piston size.

The new piston will come with rings, but they are not to be used. The rings should be removed from the old piston, and install on new piston in the position they were removed to prevent oil consumption. Do NOT dress the bores! Care should be taken to assure the old rings are re-installed in the same position in the same bores as they came out of. Document ID 195097 describes the piston and connecting rod assemble procedure which requires the use of heat during dis-assembly and re-assembly. HEAT MUST BE USED DURING DIS- ASSEMBLY AND RE- ASSEMBLY TO PREVENT PISTON DAMAGE and/or rod distortion.

a follow-up post from C5-TECH on the other forum...

"Just to clarify, that is a preliminary document, not an issued TSB..."

I'm interested to find out what that means.

The part of measuring the smallest piston, and putting it in the smallest hole bothers me. Wonder what the manufactuers tolerance for new pistons are? Wonder why 90% are #1 hole? I personally would hone or deglaze the walls and use new rings. If done proper no problems. They just don't want the it to be an oil burner and the average tech can't deglaze it right and they leave all the hone debris in the pan. If you plug the bottom of the cylinders with plastic round plugs and clean with hot soapy water after a slight close pattern cross hatch, then WD 40 good.
The LS6 pistons are differant comp ratio but they still change the rings when they do the rering. Right??

I thought the LS1 & LS6 engines built after April '01 got the coated pistons to eliminate the slap

Which piston is number one? Front left? Front right?

Front right...

If it was me, I think I would have them send it to the local machine shop, hone it .005, throw in a set of JE's and never look back...

HI there,
Front driver side piston.
And, if you look a little closer, not many does this apply to, and it does NOT apply to the cold start piston knock due to carbon buildup.
You can remove the injector plug, and your noise will change.
Allthebest, c4c5:eek:
