ok so here is the deal, I had my car do the oil consumption test with the dealer. test consist of
1. oil change by them
2. me driving until 1000 miles or oil light comes on
3. them deciding what to do next
well during the oil change they said they found metal shavings and bearing material in my oil. told me to do the test and see what happens.
I drove the car and the oil ight came on I brought it into the shop and they said it was 2 quarts low. this was at just over 1000 miles. so they said they are ordering the first part of the oil test problem that they had to do before they did the re-ring. The parts come in and I find out it is rockers and some other gaskets and such. I don't recall ever seeing the rockers getting replaced for oil consumption? Anyone ever hear of this? I have heard of bad rockers in the 2001's but I would think if bearing went from my rockers into my oil I would be seeing some serious problems? never mind some power loss maybe? I just had it dyno'ed at 351 rwhp
Any help/sugestions/info to take to them would be great thanks
Brian

It's a separate issue that has nothing to do with the oil consumption problem, and, frankly, I'm rather surprised they told you to keep driving the car. I wouldn't expect a noticeable difference in operation.
If they ever do the rering. LOOK at the rod beraings that come out
and see if they are all scratched up with debris. If they are, then the main bearings and the oil pump are short lived. I wonder why they told you to drive it after metal was found in pan???

cause this shop sucks and I swear I will not bring my car back there again
it's a big service center and it's .5 miles from my house so it was easy too thought I would be ok, guess not. Hopefully the car gets out of the shop ok and everything is fine. Kinda sucks not having it though.

HI there,
Per your request, yes there is a TSB for rocker arm bearing material in the pan.
You should have stopped driving the car as soon as this was found. This will cause undue strain of the rocker arm, valve stem tip, and pushrod.
Basically, as for the oil consumption, no the rocker arm will NOT cause your oil consumption.
All rocker arms should be replaced, and the valve stem tips checked.

not only did they have me drive it I was driving it for the oil comsumption test then while we waited for the parts to come in. I drove it pretty hard for the oil test just to make sure it would burn too. think there is any serios damage???
I doubt you did any damage...once they have the motor apart you should head down there and check it out.
As I said to you over IM, I would not be to keen about the idea of re-ringing the motor. Additionally, LS1s burning oil has been a constant problem, and the f-body guys have found the cure has been to upgrade to an 02+ LS6 PCV system as well as new valley cover. Looking at that TSB I am not sure if they are resealing the 01 valley, or actually going with an 02 valley? Swapping valleys will require some light grinding to get the new cover to fit with your block. This sounds like the best way to cure the oil consumption problem.
Again, I would not be thrilled at the idea of the dealer touching the bottom end of the motor -- but that's just me.

The part listed on that TSB is in fact the latest valley cover, so you are all set.
While they have everything apart, have you thought about doing a new oil pump? IIRC the pumps are inexpensive, and it may not be a bad idea to replace with a new 02+ one.
Hi there,
The valley cover is only one part of a larger concern, and should not be considered a cureall for the oil consumption issue.
Fcar engines are different and should NOT be confused.
This is why the GM TSB states to replace the valley cover first, and THEN, if the consumption continues, replace the rings.
As for the valve stem tip possibility, it should never be assumed that everything is ok. Everything must be measured and checked.
