I donít' think anybody mentioned one problem, Just because they have the Exxon or Mobil, Amoco or Shell, etc. Signs out front donít mean they are using that gas. Also another big problem is the privately owned gas stations will put regular gas into the premium tanks. Unfortunately this does happen. So Mobil may be the best one day and somewhere else may not even be Premium or even Mobil.

The gas you get can be refined by anyone. Oil companies trade gas in different markets shipped via pipeline. Just because is says Shell, Exxon, etc. does not mean it was refined by them. It can be anyones!!!!!!!!!!! Trust me I work for a major.........

I understand that there are only 4 or 5 major refiners that produce the raw gasoline but do they use different additive formulations for different customers? If not, how do you explain the difference in appearence and octane rating? When Sonoco was still available around here they were the only brand that was blue. Amaco is the only brand I know of that is crystal clear. The others vary from light pink to light yellow. What gives?

Not True, I user 76 100 octane mixed with 91 octane. The last time I filed up it was $3.50 per gal for the 100 octane.

About five miles from me is a huge 'tank farm' where most of the trucks fill up. I was told by one of the guys there that even though the majors draw from the same tank farm, the buyers still regulate what additives (cleaners, etc) are added at the time of filling the tankers.

I was gonna post saying that I preferred the union 76 100octane race fuel. But you beat me to it. Damn.

I used a 50/50 mix, and it worked out ok, and a bit easier on the pocket book

Manatee, do you live near Doraville?? That might be our terminal.

Guys, there are way more than 5 refiners in the country. Bad information!!!

What happens is say you have two refineries in Oklahoma. Each may ship their product in the same pipeline. It ends up in the same tank at the terminal. The only difference is the additive pack that each company injects into the gasoline when loaded on the tank truck.

Or it can be an exchange. Company x trades barrels of gas they have refined in one part of the company to another company. This is called an exchange. Still refined by Company "X", but sold by Company "Y".

Also, do you really think that Sunoco has a tank in the ground for all the octanes you see at their pump. It is blended as your are pumping it into your car. The basic octanes are Reg Unlead and Premium. They are then blended either by the refinery or as they are loaded on the tank truck. Octanes levels will also change based on altitude. You will typically see lower pump octanes in higher altitude states.

Hope that helps!!

*slap*

I said I read several articles....in fact the one which mentioned the Tech. was NOT in the article by the Exxon/Mobile/whatever engineer....that particular article was just on the processes of the refinement, etc...

Hmmm. I never pass by a 76 in my normal routes, but I know where there is one. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks for the tip! (I think - $3.50/gal??? Ouch!!!)
