Popping sound in intake

I recently installed my Halltech T-1 and on the return trip from Bowling Green to Florida noticed a random but distinct "popping" sound coming from what seemed like the top end/intake manifold of the engine. Not really a pinging noise, almost like small backfires. Occurs on acceleration or coasting at highway speeds after the engine had warmed up. Doesn't seem to adversely effect performance but I don't have a lot of seat time before and after to compare it with.

I'm assuming the intake has caused an overly rich (or is it lean?) condition which is causing this nearly inaudible noise. The car did illuminate the "check engine" light on one leg of the trip back but it went off at the next fill-up. Haven't had time to find out what the code was yet.

Any ideas?

Re: Popping sound in intake

I believe you have an air leak after the MAF causing unmetered air to get into the T/B. This can cause the noises you describe. Do a thorough examination of all the connections and make sure no air is getting through.

Good luck.

Les

Thanks, Les. I was hoping it was something simple. I remember reading that it was easy to get an air leak with the T-1 if not precisely installed. I'll take a look!

Did you ever get that new hood? If so, where's the pics???
