Purpose of mesh front grille intakes?

I have to replace my right side lower mesh grille because road debris (a piece of metal) smacked into the mesh at 65 mph and completely knocked out the screen. Looking directly into the grille, I see no purpose of routing air into these openings. The small low opening goes to cool the brake and air filter housing I assume comes up from under the front of the car.

Unlike the 2014 Vette that will route air out from the hood, I wonder what this grille opening does besides create drag?

Thanks!

No purpose. It's just there to look cool.

Okay, was wondering if blocking the vents from behind with a plate will help improve aerodynamics? The thought of turbulent air being sucked in the vents and not being vented anywhere sounds like drag to me!

Or just adding fog lights to the front. Might as well give a purpose to the blocking.
