Anyway, I went to pick up some polyethylene repair tape and the Depot didn't have any, so I grabbed a roll of quick release (low tack) blue painters masking tape (like 3M brand) We use this stuff all the time when we're painting at the homestead (been painting lot too!).
I would think since this stuff doesn't damage newly (water based) painted walls, it would probably be reasonably safe for a car. Just looking at something to save a few dings if possible - just gonna run it along the leading edge, the fender wells and the side mirrors.
I absolutely do not have a garage queen, but if you can save a little damage for $5 and 20 minutes of time, why not!
Just don't want to pull the tape the next day and see yellow on the tape
DT,
If you are asking if this tape will pull off your paint, I would say you are fine. I use high stick racers duct tape on my wheel wells with no problems. I would think you would have the opposite problem- that blue painters tape doesn't stick well at all... I'd worry it would come off.
It works well. I've used it at the track on top of well zaino'd paint and it sticks enough to stay on but comes off real easy. I think its the perfect stuff for what you are using it for!

No, please God, no!!! I am sick of seeing those bitching MY cars with bright blue wheel arches. Looks TACKY, boys. Spend a buck or two and get color matched (nearly) racer tape from Racers wholesale or some such. MUCH better photo ops. And what you have after track day is some residue which comes right off with brake cleen. You do have a couple cans of brake cleen, don't you?
Personally, I hand applied XPEL. You can hardly see it. and NO CHIPS. Just my $.02
Brad and all, this is the place I got my second set from. The first set I had installed by Stongard in bellevue, wa, 700.00 for the Z28. XPEL is just the vendor name. The product is 3M Scotchcal 8 mil paint protection film. WWW.xpel.com/
I bought the Corvette mask, and added some bulk to cut my own over the headlights, mirrors, door handle opening, rockers, top of rear deck liftover.
Hand done it took me 8 hours to do the mask, wheelwells, headlights. They have a good install slide show.
If you're not so inclined (Cheap!) you could have any auto trim shop do the install.
Saw an EB Z06 in Portland who went kinda overboard, whole hood, front of roof, and the panels I mentioned.
Somebody show me how to upload a pic and I'll show you what an edge photo of the front end looks like. Or just look at any of the Porshe widebody cars. They usu have a patch right in front of the rear fender. You don't see the coating, just the edge which tends to pick up some wax.
The talent some of you guys demonstrate just blows me away. I watched my Corvette Armor (same product) being put on by a woman who does it for a living. She had done dozens of cars. It took her 8 hours. No way could I ever get it done doing it myself. My advice: unless you are patient and good at this sort of stuff, don't try it. Mine has been on for about 18 months and is starting to show some pulling on the underside of the rocker panels and one spot on the passenger side sill. I had everything but the mirrors done.
I am still going to Blue-tape my car next track day. Removing the black marks from the Corvette Armor is just as difficult as removing them from the paint.

Bob,
I have seen this stuff installed on a car. Very hard to see until you get close.
After seeing the pounding my car is taking from rocks on the track, I think I am going to install this.
Thanks for the link.
Brad, keep running up front like you have been and that will solve that problem for you. Heh, heh, heh.
I installed mine on the used ZO6. Had about 5 very small chips, very hard to see. Thought the paint repair would have been way more annoying that the little bitty chips.
RossoZ: I am only semi good at this stuff so I have a few little bloopers. Had I watched the slied show on their site, I'd have been better prepared. I am going to remove material from my first wheel well(the practice one) and replace. that's the only noticeable booboo. The trick, if and only iff you will commit to the day it takes to do, is practice on the rear "rock throwup" area, do dit a couple times, then attack the front with its width and compound curves. By the time you practice a bit, and I was a total virgin when I started, you get a feel for the stretchiness of the material and it goes on smooth and bubble free.
As I said in other strings, I like these hands on projects. Always learn something.
And I was serious about Brake Cleen. Absolutley dissolves the marble marks instantly, they wipe right off. Simply rewax.
Geez, forgot to add, they send you the whole install kit except the baby shampoo and the isopropyl and spray bottles.
Plastic blades to smooth the material, soft wipes to thoroughtly and lint free clean the surface, and written instructions (go to the wbsite slide show first).
I haven't tried the racing tape but I have tried the blue painter's tape. I have a well Zaino'd car and it doesn't stick at all. The first pass at Autox and it is dangling and falling off. I'm going to try the high tack racing tape. I'm checking at Summit Racing this weekend.

ROSSO,
Use blue tape if you want, it will come off very easily. Or use the racer/colored duct tape, but stick it to your pants first. It will take some of the sticky off. If you decide to purchase the track pictures, you will be much happier if you used a colored tape, otherwise...
Use WD40 to get any rubber marks etc off of the car. Cheap, easy to find, safe and effective.
