Shifter Boot Insulation

What's the best way to insulate the shifter boot (quiet down aftermarket short shift kit)?

I had some Dynamat material left over from quieting down a PC. This stuff looks like heavy foil with synthetic rubber on one side. The threory is that it turns sound in to mechanical energy not reflect back . Some one here said they got theirs for about $20 in a Best Buy from a Circuit City type of place.

Second item would be a rubber boot from an import car underneath the leather boot. I have not done this. Not sure I will

Last thing that I want to do is slip a 2.5 in long rubber hose over the place where the upper shifter and the lower piece are joined by two bolts. I have the BPP shifter. However I have not figured out how big in diameter it needs to be or where to get just a small piece. Everyone would want to sell you 15 ft or more as a complete garden hose. So I am still working on this one. Any ideas on where?

On my Ripper, I actually pushed the boot down as far as it will go so you can see the fine machined shifter - together with the milled aluminium shift-knob.

I would like to could get rid of the boot all together and just have an aluminium shift gate. That will cleanup the center console nicely.

Did you try the Dynamat material yet?

I have posted extensivly about this search subject Hurst and poster Glenns. I did hear of a guy that used a rubber kitchen drain stop. He placed it upside down over the housing and says that it really quited things down.

I've been on the lookout for somthing like that that would fit. In the mean time mine is quite

I just cut it circular with a hole in the middle and put it on the shifter. When the leather boot goes on it is not going anywhere.

Thanks. I'll make a trip to the electronic shop and see if they carry Dynamat.

I got some foam strips from Home Depot that is made for insulating a door and wrapped it around the base of my Hurst
shifter where it meets rubber boot. It has adhesive on one side
to help keep it in place. I think I wrapped it around two or three
times. It really helped alot.

Maybe the manufacturer of the shifters could include what is needed to make their shifter quiet.

gaijin,
I also installed some dynamat around my hurst. It was just too loud for me. I bought a door kit at the local audio shop for $20. It can with 2 12"x12" sections.
First I cut out a section to lay over the rubber insulator that I flipped upside down. I cut an "X" in it and dropped it on top. Make sure that it doesn't move too much when you shift. I taped it down with racer's tape (much like duct tape) so I could pull it off if necessary.
Second, I saw that by itself wasn't going to work as most of the sound was coming up through the opening of the rubber isulator that had been turned upside down. But I left the other part to cut out heat. To further kill the sound I cut out two strips of the dynamat to make another cross. On these I put a very small "X" hole in them (just big enough for the shifter stalk) and attached them to the dynamat already down.
This extra "X" is what did the trick. Make sure to leave enough play so that you can easily go into the gears without pulling it out or widening the hole. If you widen the hole in the dynamat, it won't cut as much sound.

Now my console is much quieter and much cooler!

I also read that it would help to make sure the knob isn't screwed down all the way if you are running a stock knob. Back it off one thread.
Also, make sure your shift stops are to your liking before putting down the dynamat. I would like to adjust mine, but it is going to be a real pain to get to them. So I am leaving them for now.

Hmmm...the only noise my Hurst makes is the buzzing of the shift knob at 1500-2000rpm in 3rd or 4th gear. I have the MGW pistol grip and I put a bunch of dynamat that I got at a local circuit city into the shifter hole before screwing it down. Still buzzes a little though. Guess I'll try putting it under the boot and around the shift shaft.

Do you mean into the shifter where the demon key installs ?
