so there was this oil spot...

Lets start from the beginning. I bought an ASP UDP for my 2002 Z06. It was put on about 1000 miles ago and one day on my way home from work i noticed this belt squeal. No big deal right? Maybe some belt dressing, clean it, or worst case buy a new belt. After i sprayed and cleaned it the sqeal was still there so I decided to get a new belt put on.

The next day when i left my garage to take the vette to the shop i noticed an oil spot on the floor...... I get a phone call from the tech later on saying that the pulley is whobbling and created the front main seal to break loose or something.

2 questions:

Did this happen because it was installed wrong?

What could all be wrong? I'm hoping the crank and block are ok!

I don't know enough about installing an underdrive pulley to really know what could've gone wrong, but... as a note of caution to you, I had a pretty bad experience with a harmonic balancer coming off and bouncing on the front subassembly, which damaged the front seal. Though we replaced the front seal and harmonic balancer, as soon as we ran the motor we lost oil pressure and shortly thereafter a rod came out the side of the block.

If you replace your front seal and balancer, please keep rpms low for a while and very very closely monitor oil pressure. If you see anything abnormal, I'd suggest you have your motor torn down and the bearings replaced. I wish I had done that rather than having to replace a motor.

The simple answer is Yes it could have been caused by improper installation. The problem will be in trying to prove that now that it's all torn apart. It could have been torqued improperly or it could have been a bad pulley.
