Steering wheel noise

Lately when I've been parking or throwing a U-turn, my steering wheel has been making squealing noise. When I turn it hard left or right, it almost sounds like it's crying .
Any ideas on whats this could be? A friend of mine told me it could be a bearing.

You sure it's not the tires? Sometimes mine do that (especially in the parking garage at work). The other thing to check is to make sure you don't cut the wheel all the way one way or the other. When you do that it puts more pressure on the power steering hoses and such and can make a whine. Take the wheel back a few degrees. Car will turn just as sharp, but without the pressure buildup.

I definitely know it's not coming from the tires. It's coming from the steering column.

Does it sound like it's coming from the power steering pump?

I have the same problem. It's coming from the steering column.
On the corvetteforum.com they metion putting in Lithiium grease in the steering wheel bearing. Not sure how to get to it. I'm going to have to check this out more.
Your not the only one.

A friend of mine told me that it might be the upper steering wheel bearing.

Let me know what you find out.

HI there,
Another solution to the steering bearing at the bottom of the column, is Dry release lubricant.
It is made by 3M and can be sprayed in and it will penetrate.
However, it is very difficult to get to.
Its only 2 pieces of plastic rotating together.

Remove the screws from the back of the steering wheel hub and the horn/airbag assembly lifts off the front of the wheel. Disconnect the yellow airbag wire. There's a big nut and a couple of snap rings that have to be removed and the steering wheel will pull off. Under the wheel is a big donut-ish shaped thing, the steering wheel angle sensor. It just slides off the wheel shaft. It's keyed so it'll only go back on one way. The bearing is exposed beneath that sensor.

Start with the wheels straight the the steering wheel level so when you put it all back together the steering wheel will still be centered.

Mine was doing the same thing about 3 years ago and the pic shows the spot the squeaking/rubbing sound was coming from.
c4c5specialist told me to spray some white lithium in there and it worked. No need in taking things apart, just pop the hood and it's right there.
