I went back to factory wheels and tires for traction and cornering.
Goodyear mounted and balanced my new tires on the rims, I noticed my stock rims had external weights (syntax?) vs. the stick on weights inside the wheel. Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Don, it's a good question. I have heard a couple of opinions on this when I had my BFG's and my ET Streets mounted but I am curious to what some of these guys have to say.

Don,
Don't really know if the difference is purely cosmetic. I do know that my wife's TL 3.2 Type S came with factory weights stuck on the inside of the rim. Don't know why GM insists on placing the weights on the outside lip of the rim
Don't you have chrome wheels, Don? Personally, I'd opt for the stick ons (on the inside) just for appearance purposes. I can't believe a reputable tire shop would do that without asking you for your preference.

Charlie,
I just noticed your posts. Congrats! Welcome to the club
When i got my Hoosiers mounted (just on an extra set of stock wheels) the guy at Discount tire said the stick on weights that go inside the rim are less likely to fly off at high speeds- though he did recommend that i should still put racers tape over the weights as a precaution. Hope this helps - -
Inside stick on weights here. That and metalized tape covering them. (Don't use duct tape or the normal racers tape as it won't stay on and gets all gooey.)
Sorry Don! It's late here in NY. I went back and read your original post again and realized you said FACTORY wheels. My point about stick ons vs. clip ons is moot.

Less likely than what? Any stick on weight is MORE prone to flying off than a clip on.
Regarding tape over the weights...wouldn't the tape throw the newly balanced wheels out of balance?

I actually heard the opposite from HRE, a stick on weight is more prone to flying off at high speeds. They recommend the racers tape. I would guess the metal tape is very thin and light and a non factor. Anyone know for sure, it's a good question-I need tape.

You've confused me.
Didn't we both say the stick on will fly off easier?
I prefer the stick on....as they are on the inside....
If they come off, they will hit the inside of the rim first( most likely).
The clip on's, are gonna hit the fenders first.....
Also, they are lead..and not lead and steel inserts.
