Headers are done...more on that in the other thread. Fired right up no codes or anything. Only thing is that when you give it gas, theres a high pitched squeal. Its not a constant squeal though. Its about the pitch you would expect to hear from a votech supercharger, but it almost ticks like an exhuast leak if that makes sense. My buddy who helped with the install says it sounds just like his old S10 did when he had a stuck lifter. But why the hell would I have a stuck lifter?? Ill run it for a few days, and then retorque everything and see if that helps. Anybody have any ideas???
Can't see where it would be anything internal. If you did external installation of headers only check the alternator /belt assy.which I'm sure you removed/installed. All the saprk plugs in and sealed?
Tick, tick is an exhaust leak usally and will be lessened as the metal expands. Check your gaksets that they are all installed right and snug. It's easy to cross thread these mothers in the heads. Don't over tighten the aluminum head bolt threads.
Look for exhaust gas leaks (blk) around flanges etc. If you can put it in the air and start it cold and you'll find it.
As for the squeeling that's why I mentioned the alternator. Don't worry about a bearing. Every timed I've lunched an engine the bearing would squeel and smell like burned oil then no oil pressure. (Race Engines)
I'd say the last thing you worked on is the probable source. Don't start guessing. Get her in the air and start it up cold looking for black exhaust streak leaks on the flanges etc. All the flanges even the emissions. Check all your emissions lines that they are connected around the master brake area. Something maybe disconnected or loose.
Check the above header under SEARCH and see what you.
Don posted this link that he is using to help him install his Kooks. At the bottom of the link there is a FAQ's section that says you will experience a ticking sound that is due to the walls of the pipes being thinner.
when my first set of headers went on, that's the sound I heard too. you can check by letting the car cool off, then putting soapy water around the flanges, it will bubble up when you start the car if there's air coming out where you put the soapy water
Ask/read about your type headers, anyone else with the same type headers experience problems after installation etc.? Call the MFR. if your still worried Monday.
A lifter suddenly going south after a header installation just doesn't jive with the header installation.
Since you removed the alternator listen and check for belt whine and proper alignment and make sure it isn't rubbing against anything but the pulleys. Check/listen to the belt tensioner as well.
ok, having done headers and had leaks before, Im pretty sure its not a leak. I was very careful about threading/torquing the bolts. I did the soapy water deal, and didnt get a leak, on anything. My next guess is that its the belt. Im gonna let it cool off, have some beers and some dinner, and mess with it tomorrow. I sounds very much like the whine you get when you need a new belt, and it does it on acceleration and deceleration, but not at idle. It also gets faster as the RPMs climb, espectially if you floor it in 6th gear where they climb slowere than if you floor it in 1st. On a brighter note, I got my new Toyos installed just now.....its a whole new car with good tires on it!!!
Congrats on your completed install...hope you get the "whine" fixed quickly. Let me know when you get a chance for a dyno...I'm very interested with your HP/TQ gains.
ok, removed and reinstalled the belt twice this morning. No luck. The best way I can describe the noise is a higher pitched kind of sqeeky gurgling noise when you either let off the gas, or as the revs climb in a higher gear like 5th or 6th. Its not present as you accelerate in 1-4th. Im at a loss and have no idea what it could be. My only thought is that it has something to do with the vacuum effect with the new headers, but Ive put headers on many other cars, and never experienced anything like this. Any thoughts?? Id really like to get this taken care of this weekend, as it will bug the hell outta me all week. I guess if I cant get it worked out Ill just have to take it up to MTI, and have them do the cam earlier than I had planned, no sense in spending 500 bucks for a dyno tune for just headers right? ?
Contact the manufacturer Monday. Just write down what changes were made and not made and let them suggest
what to look for. I'm sure they have had your problems pop up after an installation on other cars.
If the noise is present even slightly at idle remove the belt with the engine cold and see if the noise is present.
When the belt was off did you rotate the alternator rotor and listen for any bearing nosies?
no, I actually did not start it up without the belt on, nor did I rotate the alternator with the belt off. Ill give both of those a try. I wont damage anything running it with the belt off for a few minutes will I??
'd say not. What would happen if your car threw a belt on the road? GM would make lifetime belts then.
Your only going to be idling for a couple minutes. You might have to clear some codes after reinstalling the belt or disconnect the battery to clear everything after installation, thats what I do.
Just do it cold or cool and check the alternator rotor and any rotating parts that you can turn freely by hand before starting the engine. look around the pulley's for a possible lost BOLT or WASHER etc. hiding out behind a pulley.
Also the belt tensioner should be easy to move. Livng near salt water I had a belt idler actually freeze up on me streesing out the whole system.
If you don't find anything as mentioned before check with the MFR.
thanks for the help...I plan on calling the manufacturer as well as Dave at MTI tomorrow...hes always been very helpful. Ill give the belt/alternator a shot once it cools down. Thanks again!!
well, took the belt off and started her up. Still there. Checked the alternator and rotated all the pulleys. Nothin. Im getting frustrated, and what worries me is that it sounds internal. Its comming from the drivers side of the motor and its nothing Ive ever heard before. I wish someone of the forum lived around here so they could listen to it and tell me what they think. I dont want to take it to the Stealership, since all they'll do is tell me that I voided my warranty and charge me 150 bucks to tell me they have no idea and Im on my own.
