I live in southern Georgia where the temps are 70-90 most of the year and have gone to 10w30.

Here in California the temps 50 - 90 degrees and most use 10w-30. No reason for 5w when you never get below freezing.

My .02. I've heard from many sources that most engine wear occurs at start-up. From that I believe it follows that 5W-30 is superior to 10W-30.

If you read your hand book it states something like, if your temperature never goes below 0 degrees F (much colder than freezing) you can use 10w-30.
As far as start up, I’m more worried about protection when screaming through Death Valley at 130mph with the temp 110 - 120 degrees.

But technically, 5W-30 and 10W-30 have the same viscosity when at the same hot temperature (the very meaning of the viscosity numbers), so 5W-30 and 10W-30 should give the same high temp protection ... ie, 30 weight oil.

The viscosity at cold temps is different (5W vs 10W), and yes the 5W will flow more/faster at cold startup. GM recommends 5W-30 all the time, but does say in the owner's manual that 10W-30 is acceptable if ambient temp is above 0 deg F.

How hot does it get where you are? It get so hot here that I have taken to 10w 50 as it doesn't go below the upper 20's but often exceeds 110 ambiant air and about 130-140 or more on the tarmack... I feels safer with the 50w viscosity to carry the heat away FWIW
