Thinking of going '01 Z06 w\ H\C. Do's and don'ts?
I was thinking of getting an '01 Z06 and doing a H\C package. Is there any reason to go with an '02+ over an '01? I heard of an oil consumption problem but its probably overplayed like the issues with my Cobra of which I've had none.
I'm looking for 400+ rwhp and maintianing drivability and longevity. is this possible? I've heard headers are a must with H\C too. Anything else? Pump upgrades, tires, bracing? Whats an LS6 good for on stock internals w\o hitting the absolute edge? What kind of times in the quarter? I'm assuming mid 11's or better with a good launch.
hey-i have an 01-bought last yr with 4400mi-
man ,go for it...everyone worries about the "oil prob" many don't have a prob-check it out -have some money for mods..since i only have 9500 mi on it now-maybe in a yr or two i will sell mine for a good price and probably have less than 20k mi. on it .
would be a good one to 'build up-course for a stock one -it runs great-and i can't tell any "big difference from 02-04 ,maybe at a 100mph+look for a good deal on 01's -there out there
if you do a search you will probably find more information.. a lot of the new guys are asking the question .. but if your not bothered for a search i will let you know
The Z06 is a great car no matter what year you pick, first comes the Z16 commerative edition and then the 50th anniversary Z06's and then the rest of the 02+ Z06 and then the 01's. They are priced in that order for good reasons, many are self imposed(when i wanted to get a Z i said i HAVE to get the 405 hp one). Make no mistake thought about the 01's they are slightly slower but if ur modding them they are the same platgorm of the Z, a Z with a full H/C package on any year Z06 will probably dyno the same. for resale value the 02+ are better, yet you can take that and turn to your advantage.. u can probably find a very clean 01 for a very low price.. a price at which an 02 will have 20000 more miles.. if you buy an 01 and mod it it will be equally as fast as the 02's but remember you wont have the 405 emblem nor will you have HUD(things you can change and probably wont care about after a few weeks) the oil probelm is found on many 01's yet if you choose one that has been fixed or has an extended warrnaty there is no reason why you should worry at all.. finally pick the color and year you would like, cuz once you get the Z it will be very hard for you to switch to anther one..
as far as numbers a head and cam package could range anywhere from 400 at the wheels to 500.. its all dependent on what you would like to live with as far as driveabilty and civility on the street. headers are a must only if your looking to optimize ur gains and increase them to the max(given a fixed setup0 yet if you wish to avoid it .. you can.... quarter mile times are also variable, it depends on ur skills as a driver and how hard you will launch the car, many members have gone 11's(hell a stock one with some sticky tires could do it) and a number have hit 10.5@130... again it all depends on the choices you will make..
welcome to the forum and hope i answerd any quesitons you have..
Thanks guys! I read through a bunch of pages but nothing had what I was looking for. You guys summed up what I thought though that there wasnt much other than the output and a couple bells and whistles. I'm not worried about a "405" emblem becaause when I'm done I'll need a "504". Right now I'm on a fact finding mission in a few months the dust will settle from the buyout(BOC\Airgas) and the C6s hit in full force I'll be looking for sure. I should be able to find one for @$20-$25K.
I'm having fun with the Cobra but it'll be cheaper and easier to add the power to the Z06 than to get the handling out of the '03 Cobra i have. I love it but I learned a ton over the 14 months I've had it and now want a more well rounded performance car.
If you do heads and cam, it won't cost much more to have them put in new rings while they are at it, and with the money you save from buying an 02 you should definitely be ahead. This is my plan for my 01. If you are doing H&C then there is no really difference between the model years anymore.

While the odds are probably in your favor of not getting an '01 with an oil consumption problem, it actually is a concern with these cars. A significant percentage of the '01s did have a pretty serious problem with oil consumption and in '02 the rings were re-designed, so buyer beware. In my humble opinion looking at your plan to wait until the C6 hits to buy, I would go with an '02+. The clutch in the '02 will last longer when you throw on the heads an camshaft, and most importantly the '02+ has a little bit freeer flowing intake and exhaust track (De-screened MAF, and elimination of pup cats) and sodium filled valves. Sodium filled valves significantly reduce valvetrain mass and will have a positive effect when you install a bigger camshaft down the road.
Of course all of this is subjective and as said above all of these issues can be addressed when you are having the H/C installed if you can get your hands on an '01 at a good price.
My only advice would be to take a good deal of time researching camshafts and learning exactly what driving manners you want out of your car, and what you are willing to do as far as maintenence.
H/C cars performace will vary based on the aggressiveness of the package, but I think you can consistently run mid-high 11s on a mild H/C package and street tires. Go with a bigger camshaft and some sticky tires and 10s are certainly not out of the question. Best of luck
Better syncros in the '02 trans., and steel shiftfork and better syncros again in late '03.
The '01 has a F*%(*d transmission.
You can by a '99 FRC do a tranny swap H&C it and be up there also for even less $s since you "don't need no stinking badges".

Hey Tom, do you have any dates from the swap in late '03?
