Too Much Fluid in Differential

Last night the wife and baby left to go out of town to visit relatives, so I had plenty of free time to tinker with the car.

The car is an 03 with 2,300 miles on the clock and ever since it got hot here in Houston, I noticed oil spray on the back of the car. When I first took into the dealership they inspected it and re-torqued the differential covers.

I still was having the spray show up on the car. I crawled under the car without jacking it up and inspected what I could see. It turns out that without jacking up the car, you can't see much of anything. However, I could feel that there was some oily residue up by the vent valve along with spray patterns all over the bottom of the trunk and exhaust.

To make a long story short, last night I had time to take the fill plug off of the differential. Not a whole lot came out, but I could definitely tell the level was even with the bottom of the plug. I siphoned some of the fluid out till it was approximately 1/8th inch from the bottom of the plug.

After I buttoned up the differential, I jacked the car up and really inspected the differential cover on the driver side and the axle shafts. The good news is there was no oil by the axle shaft. However, there was some fluid up by the vent and could see how it was running down the left side of the differential. Previously I have cleaned this off, but there was more.

Hopefully I have fixed my problem. If this doesn't work, the nest step would be to bring it back to the dealer and let them replace the side cover and o-ring.

Later! Gotta go drive!!!

Common issue. The oil will spew out of that vent on top of the diff when it gets hot. Overfilling exacerbates this. Often diagnosed (incorrectly) as a leaky halfshaft seal.

There is one thing you can do and that's install an oil catch can for the diff vent but that's rarely done.

HI there,
The correct level is 1/8th inch below the fill hole.

Hrm, mine left a few spots on my garage floor, but doesn't seem to have leaked since. I wonder if that was my issue? If I have time, I'll put it in the air this week to check.

Thanks for posting this info

c4c5specialist,

It was your postings here and on other forums from which I figured I would give it a try since the dealer didn't seem to be as concerned about it as I was.

I figured the overfill and the high temps here in Houston this summer were the main culprits since I could never see the cover or the seals leaking and given the low miles.

Thanks for all of your contributions.
