Transmission Capacity

Last evening I drained & refilled my Transmission with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. I know the capacity is listed as 4.1 quarts, however at just over 3.5 quarts, the transmission was full to the fill hole. I let the transmission drain for almost an hour before refilling. Does anyone get the full 4.1 quarts in on a fluid change?

Thanx

Re: Transmission Capacity

3.5 quarts sound about right to me. Make sure after you fill that you put the car back down on all 4 tires, level, and let the excess fluid drain out for ~30min. Of course if your on a lift, just let the excess fluid drain out for 30 min

Re: Transmission Capacity

3.5=ok. If you do not feel smoother shifts with the fluid you chose. Next time try Amsoil synthetic ATF or Redline D-4. Made a difference for me. Enjoy your Z. Don

Re: Transmission Capacity

Thanx for the responses ~ Yes the car is level & on a lift. About 3.5 quarts was all it would take. We should amment the sticky on capacity and provide the real world numbers in addition to what is in the service manual.

After changing out all the fluids on the car (Oil, Clutch, Brakes, Transmission, Rear end, Cooling, etc) ~ the dirty-est by a long shot was the power steering fluid & we don't even recognize that one.

Re: Transmission Capacity

Phrog....Good point, I think the sticky should be updated with the tranny's "real world" fill number. One of the moderators can take care of that.

As far as the power steering fluid is concerned, your right, it isnt talked about much. I try to swap the fluid out in the reservoir every few months to keep it fresh, like as with the clutch reservoir. I am suprised how much fluid the reservoir holds, even at the "cold full" level.
