Ls3?

Old shortblock needs to be replaced, was going to go full LS2 longblock but the LS3 is only $900 more. Thinking of mating the LS3 shortblock with my modded LS6 top end and upgrading the clutch and flywheel while everything's apart.

Target is 500+ WHP N/A, although I'm more interested in increasing overall power under the curve rather than worrying about peak HP.

The shop said the motor had been overrev'd at some point, so I will be limiting the new build to 6500 RPM.

Re: Uh oh, possible busted rocker arm...

I am curious how a failed lifter can cause a block to be scrap? If the lifter roller failed and the bearings fell out, they go to the pan. The lifter rides in a tray that is plastic. I am lost here. I am sure I am missing something here. Same thing on the retainers needing replaced? Are they hunting for money?

Not knowing all the details of your build (stroker or not) I don't think you will hit 500 using LS6 top end UNLESS you: port the heads, increase injectors, fast intake/TB. I'm making 500 with a forged 418ci LS3 running L92 ported heads, ported L76 intake, 40# injectors and ported LS2 throttlebody. There should be more in there but I've still got the stock TI on 3" exhaust, no cats and running stock maf and the cam probably needs replaced: 244 250 .644 .644 114LSA.

The lifter got stuck in the bore and the cam lobe was banging against it, causing damage to said cam lobe and the bore itself. The retainers are fine.

The heads were ported and polished by DTE to flow at rates of 305/215 cfm and the valves are 2.02/1.57. The shop said one of the exhaust valves was bent and some of the others were making contact but not bent. Bigger injectors are probably in order.

The other specs of my build is in post #5.

The LS3 shortblock is 376ci. I'll know more next week after the custom cam is designed with the builder's software. He insists I should be close to 500, so we'll see.

Sucks man... I've been running YT ultralights for almost 2 years now w/ my G5-X2 cam... 3 HPDEs on the setup and over 80,000 miles on the motor now, 11k since the cam install. They sure are pretty:

Sorry -X-, didn't see the "modded top end". Interested to see what you end up with

LOL, this is getting crazy...

Engine builder emailed me tonight with his cam specs and gave me three cam options:

244/248 .615/.621 112 LSA (490 WHP - good peak, power curve shallow)
240/244 .610/.615 112 LSA (480 WHP - lower peak, steeper pwr/tq curve)
236/240 .605/.610 111 LSA (460 WHP - steepest pwr/tq curve, but lowest peak)

Since I have a 3.90 rear end, I think I will go with cam #2. He also said he found Diamond pistons that will work with my combo.

I plan on going with Lunati (same as Morel) lifters instead of LS7 or Caddy lifters. I'm tossing around the idea of pushing the shortblock up to a 418 or 427. I've asked the shop to see if the machinist can further improve the flow rate of the LS6 heads, or it might not make sense to go 418/427.

I officially have rebuild fever...

Going with LS3 - 418ci shortblock

Decided to go with the larger 418 LS3 shortblock, even though the LS6 heads can't be improved further. I figure I can upgrade the heads later and still get some improvement, but if I went with the 376 LS3 I'd be limited and I don't want to have to redo the bottom end again for a LONG time.

Cam #2 from above will be reworked to go with the bigger 418, expecting new cam numbers from the builder later tonight.

Cost of the 418 LS3 sb with software-designed custom cam is $4800.

Re: Uh oh, possible busted rocker arm...

That's exactly the shortblock combo I'd use, if disaster struck. Why not go for cubes if you gotta replace the block? Good luck with your new combo.

Re: Uh oh, possible busted rocker arm...

Thanks, man, I hope this sb will be a solid foundation for years to come. The builder already has me thinking about TrickFlow 235 heads but that will come later.

So here's the cam that was tweaked from #2 above to allow it to work with the 418:

244/248 .612/.615 113 LSA

Should be around 480-490 WHP. Buying an ASP 25% underdrive crank pulley (4K miles on it) from a guy on CF for $145 which comes with the belt and a crank pinning kit (with solid pin). Maybe the UD pulley and YT UL rockers will push it over 500. I'll have the machinist look at the pulley while the sb gets built, which is supposed to take three weeks. Heads will be worked a bit and be done Friday.

Now I just have to get my old beater Acura Integra running so I can trade it in and get another daily driver, then sell the A4.

I will probably sell the old shortblock for a few hundred in case someone wants to try to salvage it.

Looks good X. Hope you reach your goals. Looking forward to seeing what you end up with. Now lets see what those little nickel and dime items add up to.

Looks like a good sound package at a good price. Nothing wrong with the parts he's using. It should be a beast.
