What is this?

You are looking at the exterior of the lower trunk between the the two inner exhaust pipes. I am wondering what is under the square "patch?"

Just a guess, but could this be part of the velcro patch that is used to attach the insignia plates that some owners add between the exhaust tips?

It is a brand new car that has not had a exhaust plate installed yet.

its probably covering a hole, i wouldn't worry about it but feel free to ask your dealer about it...its really a meaningless spot on the car, its where the bottom of your cubby is...put an exhaust plate on it if it bothers you that much....no big deal in my book

Does your dealer put his name plate here prior to delivery? If it is a hole you could check by lifting the trunk mat.

Would it be right for a brand new car to have a hole in this location??

Guess 1. Repaired shipping damage. Maybe a chain binder handle or such.

Guess 2. Repaired Supplier Part damage

Guess 3. Repaired Line damage from the Factory

Guesses in order of my my best guess

Joe

Guess 4. Dealer damage during prep.

No, a hole in this location would not be normal. I just went out and checked my 03, it was new in May. No hole, no patch, no rubber compound, no nothing. Just the smooth outside of the trunk compartment. If it does turn out to be damage or a repair I'd see your dealer about it. Good Luck

I have a new `03 with the same "patch". Not sure what it's for, but it came that way from the factory (?).

Okay take out guesses 1 and 4 above

Wasn't one of the changes in the 03's, 04's a fuel system change? Could this have been to access something they needed to get to to change something in some cars that had already been partially assembled on the line?? Just a guess? It looks like they used a die grinder to cut a hole to get to a fitting or something and then expoxyed(sp?) in a patch. Is this where the fuel tank area would be?

Joe

I have a 03 and mine is not like that. I'd have it checked out. Unless you have a extra sharp dealer you are probably wasting your time. Ping c4c5specialist I bet he can answer this mystery.

I say if two cars have it it must be some type of retrofit at the factory that went on at least until some permanant changes were made on the line. Maybe a mid year change or improvement or upgrade or a safety issue that couldn't wait and had to be addressed by actually cutting into cars on the line. Maybe not so much a safety issue now that I think about it or we would have seen a recall??
