- replace stock shifter with better aftermarket one
- lower car (free, right?)
- remove cats (for sound improvement)
- get an off road pipe
- 02 sensors? (need them without cats, right?)
- new mufflers (for sound as well, would this be a cat-back system?)
Cost: over $1000 ???
As an alternative to removing the cats completely do hi-flow cats give you the same sound enhancement as having no cats at all? Or is it slightly quieter?
Can the cats be put back on when necessary for testing?
Are the exhaust setups sold by Corsa, Borla, etc. what you get when you want to change mufflers for sound improvement? Or can you just buy new mufflers and weld them on from any of these companies?
My advise
1. Lower and align car with a touch more aggressive set up
2. Hurst Shifter
3. Consider a CAT back improvement for the exhaust first. I prefer the Corsa Ti Race System.
I'm surely not as well versed as Tha Worm, but I would recommend starting with the air intake(Haltech T-1), then the thermostat(178 or 160), then the headers(FLP(Xpipe and RT cats and Xpipe included) or TPIS), cats(Random Tech), x-pipe(FLP or Bassani), and exhaust(Corsa Ti or Borla Stinger), and a ported and polished throttle body(Shaner or LPE), and definitely do the LS1 edit (Computer Re-program/Edit) with these mods. You will get as much gains from tuning as you would from these mods. I'm serious about this!!!!!!! Your next step could be cam or heads/cam, depending on your budget. With that go ahead and do the underdrive pulley. After that it's nitrous or super/turbo charger. I recommend Lingenfelter for that.
Hi-flow cats will give you more sound, but headers and no cats sound sweet! If you do the LS1 edit, you don't need the rear O2 sensors.....you can program them out....you don't need them......
I don't have a prob with the stock shifter, but alot of members swear that the Hurst, Kirban, BPP, or Ripper are better than stock. I can't speak either way from experience.
I've wanted to lower my Z since I got it, but my driveway won't allow it.....damn I need to move..LOL......I want to do it for the looks and the handling improvements....I haven't done it yet, but I hear that the rubber below the bumper is cheap.....LOL.....
FLP offers headers, Random Tech cats, and Xpipe as a package. It's all direct bolt-on.........no cutting...no welding.......It includes everything you need from the motor to before the muff.....all for around $1500........can't beat that.........they also include "off-road pipes" to replace the cats.......They are an easy bolt-on if you want to go between cats and not......Just tune (LS1 Edit) how you run it most often...
Exhaust........A long lived discussion..........Exotic:.....Corsa Indy or Ti Race...../////..........MuscleCar:........Borla Stingers....2 tip....or 4tip....2's are a little louder than the 4 tips.....
What's the difference between an exhaust system from Corsa or Borla and just changing out the mufflers for sound improvement? Do you get more stuff with the exhaust cat back systems?
My advice for keeping the budget:
1. Vortex rammer Intake ($200)
2. Dual exhaust cutouts (I just hope you like it loud!! Much deeper and meaner and louder than any catback available, and any exhaust shop can do this for under $100) Nice power gain as well with this, dont plan on having ANY traction through 2nd gear, even rolling into it...
3. Lower your car, yes it is free and easy, and you will be set!
TJ
All of the above would cost about $300, and you would sound absolutely sinister, trust me! Just don't plan on getting many bites for races, once someone hears a Z06 that sounds that mean, they will swear you have major engine work done, and won't bite

Mods? Check.
19/20" Iforged Evos? Check.
Where do you get dual exhaust cutouts? Do you buy them or is it a do it yourself job? Do you do this with the stock exhaust set up? Are the cutouts louder than having the cats removed?
2. 178 Vinci Stat
3. FLP L/T headers (comes with off road pipe and X-pipe), or TPIS
5. Vortex, Halltech or Vararam T1 (personally I prefer the Vararam)
6. 30# injectors
Install all of the above at the same time and get LS1Edit and dial in all in with a good wide-band tuning. If money is a problem buy a piece a a time, but go in with the end game planned so you do not waste money (on things like cut-outs, 02 sensors etc.)
Then save up for:
Ripper Shfter or equiv.
If you would like any other help spending your money let me know

well to put it in ducati terms....mufflers are slip-ons, a catback is a half system. headers would finish out a full system.
cut outs will bypass the mufflers completely and dump the exhaust under the car. Out of curiousity when I was doing my catback, I started the car with no catback on (yeah I know I'm gonna get flamed for it) sounded pretty crappy to me. Of course, its the cats still being in line that did it. I have cutouts on my tahoe, and no cats, that sounds purely insane with the pipes open, think dragster to some degree, sounds totally race-car like, but it WILL get the cops attention (trust me I know, had 2 cops pull me over on my own block to have my neighbors come out laughing)
