Wheel Hub Stud Removal/Install Question

In preparation for a brake upgrade that I am contemplating just how difficult is the removal and install of ARP wheel studs? A heavy hammer on removal and an air hammer with a bunch of washers on install seems to be the drill, but who has actually done this?

I am going from 2.5 inch long to 3.25 inch long to accommodate a bigger front caliper setup.

Naturally, I also anticipate the need for wheel spacers to clear the wheel/brake assembly. What is a good source for the spacers?

As always, any and all wisdom is much appreciated!

On the front all you have to do is take off the rotor and bang em out. On the rears there is only a small spot that allows them to come out. We used an impact wrench with a bunch of washers to pull them back in. What brakes are you doing? PM my dad (99cobra) for the place where we bought our spacers.

i dont think you want to bang on them too hard if theyre still mounted to the car. It puts too much stress on the actual bearing. You should try and press them out if theyre still on the car, or remove the hub and support the hub, then bang them out.

You could press them out with a deep socket and a C clamp i suppose.

Great Point!

I have a big a$$ C-clamp and I will use that instead of my masonry hammer! You just saved my bearings! Thanks again.

Kent Moore sells a ball joint seperator that works great. The Part# is called for in the service manual under wheel stud replacement.

When I installed my LG Spindle Ducts the ball joints separated with no more than a light smack with a rubber mallet. I agree that you should remove the hubs and press the studs out rather than beating them out on the car.

If you dont have a press (pretty cheap at Harbor Freight) then remove the hub, support the back of the hub with 2x4s on a cinder block with the wheel bearing itself recessed into a hole in the cinder block. Have at it with the hammer, one stud at a time.

Yes unless the hub is off the car don't bang them. If they are off you can catch them on the edge of the bench and tap them out. It may be time to replace them anyway. How many miles?
