ABS/Traction control Q

Last night my 02 Z threw the C 1214 h c code while I was driving normally down the highway. I had just gotten on the brakes very slightly when I got all of the warning messages. I even tried restarting the car and the ABS and Traction Control lights were still on.

I tried to clear the code while I was driving and it wouldn't clear. I also noticed that I had sprouted the U1160 H code, but I don't think that is connected.

This morning The car started fine with no indication of anything wrong on the way to work. Any folks have a clue what might of happened? Possible bad ground? I have a 1 year old Optima battery and I didn't hit bumps or anything when the code threw which made me worry. I believe the C 1214 code is the one that if it is serious indicates a new ABS module, correct? I am hoping that this is a one time random thing but if it comes back I want to be prepared.

Mine started the same way and then it ended up staying on all the time. Time to replace the module.

I would inspect your wiring to your Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) first, but most of the time it's the module starting to go out.

Thanks for the info, the 1214 Code has continued so it is time for a new EBCM. I have had a friend help me out on ordering the part (retail is like 1050) he can get it for 10% over cost at about ~650ish I don't remember the specific price. Where is the EBCM located and how hard is it to change for the do-it-yourselfer?

Removal Procedure

1. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. Disconnect the E13CM harness connector.
3. Remove the two insulator nuts.
4. Lift the EBCM/BPMV out of the bracket high enough to
allow clearance to remove the insulator mounting bolt and
the EBCM.
5. Remove the insulator mounting bolt from the EBCM.
6. Remove the four EBCM to BPMV bolts.
7. Separate the EBCM from the BPMV by gently pulling apart
until
separated.
8. Carefully remove the seal.
The seal may by reused if it is not cut or damaged.

Installation Procedure

1. Clean the BPMV seal surface with alcohol using a clean
rag.
2. Install the seal to the BPMV if it is not cut or damaged.
3. Install the EBCM to the BPMV.
4. Tighten the four mounting bolts in the following equence:
- First pass to 27 inch Ibs.
- Second pass to 53 inch Ibs.

Important: If the insulator nut was removed it must be replaced with a new insulator nut.

5. Install the front EBCM insulator mounting bolt. Tighten
the bolt to 10 ft. Ibs.
6. Install the EBCM/BPMV into the bracket.
7. Install the two insulator nuts. Tighten the two insulator
nuts to 89 inch Ibs.
8. Connect the EBCM harness connector. Important: Both
sides of the EBCM harness connector must be engaged
with lever before closing.
9. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position; do NOT start
the engine.
10. Perform the Diagnostic System Check - ABS.

Thanks Speedratchet! I got the EBCM in today so hopefully I will be able to do everything soon (depending on my work schedule).

One more question. The last instruction is to do an ABS diagnostic system check. Is that something a do-it-yourselfer can do or do I need special equipment?

Basically you're just checking for proper communication and for any trouble codes. Here is the ABS Diagnostic System Check:

Thanks for the info! I guess I will do what I can and run to see if I have any active codes after the install using the DIC.

Well, just wanted to update everybody. My car is happy as a clam now!

Over the weekend I installed the new EBCM. it took me about an hour which included a trip to the parts store for a T-20 torxdriver (all of my torx stuff is sockets which were too big to get to a couple of the screws).

If anyone is considering doing the swap yourself it is very easy. I unplugged the battery, then undid the 2 wiring clips and took off the 6 screws. Then I had to unbolt the Power steering cooler from the crossmember (to give some wiggle room, didn't disconnect anything) to slide out the old and in the new ECBM from the bottom. Besides that it is 2 wiring clips and six torx screws and then reconnect the power steering cooler and hookup the battery. PResto, no codes!

Thanks again for the info everybody!

I'm a dedicated DIYer, but did not do this myself when I needed a BPMV becuase I thought you had to run an automated ABS system bleed which required a Tech II GM electoric tool. Did you have this done. Is it not necessary?

Mine was just replaced under the Major Guard extended warranty...what causes these things to go out?...(I guess it's just one of these things that goes out every few yrs?)

Re: ABS/Traction control Q

The same thing just happened to me. What a crock of $hit. These should not be failing after 10-20k miles. As far as i am concerned this should have been a recall considering the safety hazard that it represents.

P.S. What is the insulator mounting bolt?

I suspect they fail with age more so than miles. Anyone with a C5Z owns a car that at best is a few years old now. Mine failed after about 3.5 years.
