Scott,
I'm not sure what you are after here ? You probably have a 342 stock gear right now.. if it hasn't been changed. IMO...if you are to remain on the street I would stay right there. A 373 might start to give you way too much wheel spin on street tires. Drag radials are a little better but generally need to be heated up to really get any more performance from them on the street or track.

Now if your talking about the 1/4 mile track..that is a whole new ball game. Some like the 410, some the 390 and still some prefer the 373. Guess it would all depend on how far you are planning to go with rwhp. I personally thought the stock 342 was a lot of fun at the track...my 390 takes a lot more skill and practice to launch and get thru first gear without spin. On the street..the first 2 gears are useless and dangerous as hell. I actually hit it one day in second gear about 20 mph...tires were spinning .....then they grabbed and shot me right off the road in a ditch area..I barely pulled it out before I crashed, then bounced back up on the road. It happened so fast I wasn't even freaked out. Thought I was a pretty good driver till that day..it showed me anything can happen under the right conditions.

Good luck...don't know if that helps you any or not.

Re: anybody play with rear gearing

thanks for the info i am tryin to lay as much power to the ground and tryin to avoid as much as possible just spinin my wheels. after all is said and done i should have solid 500rwhp just tryin to utilize it. perhaps more gear might be more efficient with rwhp gains?

Re: anybody play with rear gearing

500 rwhp would be great with a gear at the track. My choice would be a 390 if you have the M12 tranny. I think you would need to run some ET Streets or full slicks on the rear to use that much power and hook up. A 373 gear would also be a lot of fun.

There are just so many variables though..such as getting the right clutch to get the sixty foot down in the 1.4's and choosing the right cam or cam\heads package. Maybe some of these mid ten second boys can help you out.

Re: anybody play with rear gearing

Well, with all the people that we do buisness with in some of the "pure Stock" muscle car drags, they slip the clutch more, and run a better clutch that can take it... so, if modding the trans is out of the question... use the clutch.
