Tuning a big cam

OK so I have my fancy schmancy new 2002 Z I just bought sitting in the garage. I bought it with a forged 402, ETP LS7 heads, LS7 intake and TB, and a pretty big Cartek cam (244/252 .602 .614 114LSA). Pretty sure it has 42lb green top injectors, unsure of what MAF it has (hell it might be speed density - only have had the car for 4 days and am still poking around learning it). I have only been able to drive it, oh about 7 miles (stupid snow!!). Anyway, the short time that I have driven the car, I do not like it. The one thing that is most irritating is when I come up to a stop and push the clutch in, the motor revs to approx 2000rpm, stays there for several seconds, then drops to around 1200rpm, stays there for several seconds before dropping down to the "normal" idle speed of around 950. I would much rather the car find its idle speed initially in lieu of this "stepped" process. I mean it is kind of screwy sitting at a stop light with the car revving at 2000 rpm's for a while before it decides to calm down. This is the first time I have ever owned a car with a big cam. I absolutely plan on getting the car retuned, as right now I have no idea how it is tuned (A/F wise, timing wise). As stated before, I have no experience with such a big cam, and I do understand that it isnt going to idle like a Cadillac, but am hoping that it can at least be tuned to run somewhat "normal". Can my idle issues be tuned out?? Am I screwed with such a big cam in the motor?? I am located in Indianapolis and have heard good things about Dynotech Engineering in Ft. Wayne. They are only a couple hours away, and planned on having them retune the car. But I wanted to know what the consensus is (and educate myself a bit) before talking to them. Thanks in advance for any info/advice/suggestions you can offer!

Re: Tuning a big cam

Thanks Tom. If you say it can be done, then I am a happy camper. Just about every tuning thread I read, your name pops up along with good things people say about your tuning abilities.

Now, just need to call Mother Nature and see if she can order up an early Spring. Where did I put her number..................................

Re: Tuning a big cam

Thank you for that.
Getting ready this week to tune a 408 with a 552/564 640 lift with a 113+2 in an automatic and trust me it will be streetable when I get done.

The hanging idle problem can be taken care of and is not a cam issue but usually when you throw a big intake and throttle body on. such as a 90/90.

Re: Tuning a big cam

I've got a similar big cam, 242/248, 608/612, 110 (Thunder Racing Trex cam) that had similar issues.

Even after install and before tune, as long as the AC was off if would idle (barely), but surged like crazy.

MC Racing did the tune after the install with LS1Edit and by the time they were done it was probably as close to normal as possible. Still has that big cam lope to it, but is manageable in traffic. Still works a whole better if the AC is off.

Re: Tuning a big cam

mine does the same thing at idle. Have had it to two tuners but to no avail. Mine won't come down to normal idle until the speedo needle hits Zero. I have the fast 90/90, LG Pro headers and AFR heads

Welcome to the club. It can be tuned out. Just takes some time with the car and patience. Not all tuners are willing to go the extra mile.
