Best Intake Mods???

I am interested in simple intake mods for my '03 Z06. Can you guys out there give me some advice on which non-cut intake system is best? I'm looking for about a 20 hp increase. The three I am looking at are Vararam VR-1B, the K&N Dual Intake, and the K&N Stock Airbox replacement and filter. Price is not a big factor, but simplicity, performance and non-cut are. Thanks, Z06ers.

Hey Eddie - Welcome. This kind of question will open a tremendous can of worms. Why don't you do a search and read some of the recent threads. There are a ton of good intake mods. The three you mentioned are fine, although the K&N sure isn't going to give you 20hp. Halltech has a new tunnel ram air that some are finding to work well. Good luck.

OK I'll start the war, Vararam VR-1B is the best of the best.

Thanks Drew. I've read all of the threads and done a bunch of research, and everyone likes their own system. I was hoping for some relatively unbiased input-probably naive of me!! I'll check out the Halltech too.

Welcome!

It's amazing how many first posts are on intakes...it's the best way to make more power on the mighty Z.

Here is a comparison:

http://www.vararam.com/vr1b_comparo01.html

We carry ALL three intakes. If I can answer any questions on them I'd be glad too.

O. K. , I am going to feed the worms now. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no engineer, but I've always been a tinkerer. My first mod is the intake, and looking at the designs of all the aftermarket systems, I came to the conclusion they were all too expensive. The zip-tie method looked promising, but it seemed there was more to be had for very little effort. I had and old CAI from my Mustang laying around, which included a conical, tapered K&N filter. I first removed the old intake from the TB, and disposed of the upper shroud that incloses the stock air filter assy. With this out of the way, I reached my hand down in this space (no jokes please) and found I could touch the screens under the bumper area. You can tell that cool air will enter these screens, and the shape of the radiator shroud will direct this air to your filter area when the car is in motion. The filter I had flange was 4.5" and the MAF is 4" so I cut down a Fernco reducer, using about 3" of it and mounted up my filter. This really feels like it woke up the car! No cost to me, and I think there's a better alternative available to those who don't have an old CAI lying around. You can buy an oval K&N that'll fit without the reducer, and I think will flow even more than my conical one. It's K&N P.N. RF-1040, and I mocked up one in cardboard to assure it's fit. You can punch a hole in one end to put your emission hose in if neccesary. They're about $42 online. This mod is really easy and I think it's at least 75-90% as effective as the best intakes on the market, although I admit I've no proof of this. Can't bitch about the price, though. Sorry about the length of this, but I'm real happy to save the money for other mods.

I had the zip-tie mod and just installed a Vararam. I think there is a huge difference, but I'll find out for sure when I go to the track tomorrow.

I'd say the Vararam is the best for power but hardest to install.

The new Halltech looks easier to install, but I would guess slightly less effective than the Vararam.

The Vortex is also good for the price/ease of installation, but requires cutting. I put one on my 01 Coupe and gained 3 MPH in the 1/4.

I have a Vararam. Works great - no problems with install. It looks "almost OEM" - like it belongs there especailly with Magnuson SC sitting on top
