Shame on Shaner

I just thought I would post on a recent experience with dealing with Shaner for a throttle body!

I overnight my TB there for him to port and polish the inside portion...I mark the back with my initials so I am asured of getting back my stock TB......I pay him extra to overnight it back(which he does offer as a special arrangement) and promised it by Friday......I was told I would have it by Friday so I could take the car away for the weekend (wanted to test the mod out)....I get it back saturday afternoon...a day late and it has some DEEP file marks inside not mere scratches that would piss anyone off that just paid to have the inside sanded and polished...who cares about show polish...but file marks??? come on!!!!!......and only one side of the butterfly is done.......I call him and he offers to fix it......however I didnt want to wait and then have to put a "loaner" TB in and then switch em out again....wondering what I would get back the second time.....I also felt bad after hearing his story about his vision being so poor that he using a very strong magnifying glass to work on TB's.....So I asked him what do I need to do....and offered to do myself.....and looked a heck of alot better when I was done.......after encumbering the expense of getting supplies and time to get the stuff(trip to Home Depot 40 min round trip) I figured I was due at least the difference of ground vs. overnight shipping that I paid since I got it back late and damaged.....here is the kicker.....all I wanted was for him to refund my overnight expenses...when all was said and done...it cost me $235 + the costs of going to home depot and an auto parts store for sand paper, dremel, etc........I thought $50 (the extra I paid in overnite back and forth vs reg shipping) was fair to ask of him......am I not right????....well after various emails and phone calls I finally got him on the line for him to say $50 is out of the question and he will think about what he will refund and call me that night.....Well that was quite awhile ago...no return email or calls since then........he continually dodged me.....this was 2 weeks ago....so all I can say is how disappointed I am with the whole process of dealing with Mark Shaner for a Throttle body! So much for honoring your satisfaction guarantee these days!

My advice is get some sandpaper, dremel, and epoxy and do it yourself.....I did the entire outside while I was at it since the TB wasnt ready to go back in..... and it looks great....it does take alot of time for the outside but worth it!

I am sure to stay away from Shaner now. This is just not right having the customer do his work.

Thats your decison buddy!

I personally would never deal with him again! Who runs a business by dodging calls and emails? And not honoring there satisfaction policy? Or telling a customer you have to think about how much you are going to refund and will call later that day with an amount and then never calling or emailing but rather blowing off any further correspondence!

I didnt hear anything from him....he eventually got wind of my post and put up a BS reply....but never directed anything towards me...just tried to make himself come out rosey!

There is another post on this forum about him...and he states how poor his vision is........so why not make an allowance for the overnight shipping I paid for since he didnt see his mistakes???!!??

I've always ran my business with the understanding that 100 happy customers don't make as much noise as one unhappy customer. With that said, he should have made a very real attempt to make you happy. Too bad he didn't take that extra step. Thanks for the info, sounds like you deserved better treatment. I'd like to hear his take on the matter. Bill

I hope Shaner chimes in for his side of this story. Here's how Shaner replied to you on another forum...

Thanks for the e-mail. Here's the other side.

First off, the scratches are smaller than a hair from your head. The picture I was sent to see them was blown up several sizes to see them.
To give you an idea of how large the picture had to be blown up to realy see them, heres some measurements.
The tube in the epoxy is just under 3/8" in diameter. in the picture, it is just under 2 inches in diameter. The part number on the blade is 1/8 inch tall, in the picture - 1 1/2 inches tall. I would estimate the TB in the picture would be over 3.3 foot in diameter.

Marc paid me $200 for the TB and overnight shipping back to him, NOT $235.00
On Thursday afternoon I spoke with marc and told him that his TB was not going to be ready to ship until Friday. He told me he had to have his car running Saturday, so I paid an extra $21.00 to ship it overnight - Saturday delivery. (my expense, $51.xx total)
He called me and said there were a couple of scratches. He then sent a picture so I could see them and and they were nothing. I told him the TB's are not "show polished" and none of the TB's I do have a perfect finish. I explained about the poor quality of the castings, etc.
I asured him that there was nothing wrong with the TB and that it will never be seen once it was installed.
I offered to send him a loaner TB and polish the scraches out (at my expense) and that's what we were going to do.
The next day he calls me and tells me, if I tell him how to polish the scratch out, he will polish it. He did not say one word about charging me for doing any work. He also wanted to know about polishing the outside and what he would need.
I took the time to go over everything he needed to do and everything he would need.
I gave him every tip and trick he would ever need to do a show quality polish job.

Now here's the good part!!!
He tells me he's annal about his car, and that's why he wants the inside of the TB perfect, but he carved his name on the outside of the TB in plain sight!!!

Now this took place on December 14th.
(Remember him saying he needed his car running on the 14th) 6 days latter he had still not installed the TB.
He sent me pictures and called me for more help on polishing the outside of the TB on Dec 17th and again on the 19th. At that time he had still not said anything about charging me any money or about a discounted price.
On January 4th or 5th, I got a call from marc asking me for a discount. I asked him what he wanted and he said $50 !!!
He told me that it was for his time driving 20 minutes each way to the store, and the cost of all the materials.
He felt that was fair, because it would cost me that much to send him the loaner and the shipping for both TB's.
I told him that was out of the question, and that I had already spent an extra $21 dollars on shipping, not to mention the time I spent on the phone with him teaching him how to polish.
I also told him he had never said one word about charging me anything, or we would have had no problems.
I asked him how it would be if I got his TB back and polished it, then charged him $50 for the work - he said that's different.

I will forward the e-mails to HCVONE so he can verify the information I have given and see the picture.

It seems that there is a lot more good things I've read in different threads than what Skidmarc has to say. It also seems like Skidmarc has gone out of his way to bad month Shaner on more than one web site. It also seems that Skidmarc has only come to Z06VETTE.com to write this thread bad mouthing Shaner.

skidmarks story (copied above) is significantly different than the version from Shaner. I have personally dealt with Mr. Shaner and have installed one of his TB's. Shaner was a gentleman and his product is great. Based on my experience with Shaner I'd have to doubt the veracity, form and sequence of skidmark's claims.

I have dealt with Shaner on several occasions for two friends and have another TB at his place right now.

The quality has always been great and Shaner has always offered me and my friends the best of service. He has been more than fair and gone out of his way to get the TB's back in time for us.

I've spoken with Shaner and he seems like a standup guy to me. It is impossible to please everyone.
