I am trying to figure out what would suit me best. The car is driving on the weekends, and goes to the drags 2x a month. I first am wondering what type of power figures I could get out of an sts tt kit. I have kooks long tubes and high flow cats and a ghl ehaust. I know my car with a procharger can make 550 wheel and still be safe, what type of numbers would sts produce and how would the 2 different set ups compair? Last but not least a cartek 3x cam w/4x heads. Which is faster, which is more fun to drive and how would the all compair drivablity wise? Thanks!
I have been at one time or another had all three that you are asking about.
Heads and cam is a great start and with all the setups I have had start there.
No broken belts no heat issues, etc.
If you jump straight to S/C or Turbo you will wish you had heads and cam, been there done it.
One step at a time and I only say this because I see you like to drag your car.
The most fun to drive and once again I have a small bit of exp. is a Turbo Vette.
The STS kit is great I have one on my 408 but It's a hwy car not a quater mile car in my opinion.
Let the sh#$T hit the fan. Many will agree and many will disagree with what I said.
553/490 on an otherwise stock 03 Z06 with just the STS kit and methanol.
Went forged 346 and big fuel system adn went from 7-14 pounds of boost....710/640.
all those numbers are with stock manifolds through stock cats, I've since fried the stockers adn we pulled those replaced with bullet mufflers, and ceramic coated and heat wrapped the entire exhaust (headers are a waste with teh sts on a 346....you want velocity and pressure not freeflow) Also those numbers are with the base turbos, We've since upgraded them to a set of GT35 ball bearing units.
before I forged it i saw an 11.18 at 129 or so. next run after that the car wouldn't move in gear.......there was absolutely no clutch left.
forged its seen a 10.95 at 140 on old slicks, and 10.6 at 136 on new slicks....the turbo cars with a stick are very hard to drive.....really need to powershift to keep the car in boost and with 800 horsepower at the crank and no scattershield.........well i just don't have the balls to powershift it.
now I'm going to a 427 C5R with direct port.......want a NA motor for road racing, too many heat issues in 30 minute sessions on the track with the turbos......NA avoids all of that.....but can't take a big drop in power so thats where the juice is coming in. I've just come to the conclusion C5's can drag but weren't meant for it.......adn I'm sick of replacing driveline parts trying to prove reality wrong.
turbos are coming off within the next month or so...and will be available to a new home at that point.

well please tell me why i should get a procharger or why i should get sts
The problem with your question is the natural bias a person who replies is gonna have on the subject. Me, I'd recommend the Procharger, but then again I have a Procharger so I think it's the best. If I had an STS kit, I would probably think it was the best. If I were running an H/C setup, that would surely be the best. See what I mean.....
Your question is a good one and it is a very logical and legitimate question, however it's hard to get answers that are not biased to some degree. If we didn't think the set-up we bought was the best way to go, we wouldn't have wasted our money.
I realize that doesn't help your decision making much, but that's the facts.
Here's my idea.....go and visit the tuner that you will be using for the install, tuning, etc. Make sure it is someone you trust a great deal. Ask THEM what they feel is best, based upon what you are trying to accomplish and what they are most comfortable working on.
I debated this same thing last spring. My car (02 Z) had Vararam and headers. I considered STS, ECS Novi and Vengence racing heads/cam. My goals were mid 550 rwhp and a 10 sec pass in the quarter. I decided upon the ECS Novi and here is why:
1) The STS is more expensive, more complicated and less proven. It also probably has more potential and it has the cool turbo factor. Also I did not like the oiling system and the install looked more complicated.
2) I had my mind set on heads/cam but after pricing found that the cost was only marginally cheaper the a supercharger. It is a more simple and more reliable system though. Installation is harder than supercharger. Driveability will suffer, no matter what people tend to say. It will not drive stock.
3) The supercharger offered good power and is an easy install. I installed mine in 2 easy weekends. It is cheaper than the STS. They are proven to be very reliable. The kit from ECS cuts down on a lot of the trips to the parts house and custom modifications. It drives like a stock car until you go WOT. It makes boost at 3k RPMS. I made 530/490 on the dyno through 3.90 gears and with a real safe tune. The car is crazy fast on the street and still capable of long trips. I made a 6 hr round trip last week.
I am happy with my decision, but you will get all kinds of opinions. Do your research and make an educated purchase, then you will have no regrets.
I know this is stating the obvious, but...
I recommend if you can to try and ride in a turbo/ supercharged and H/C car to feel the difference. That is if you can ,as the ride experience is all different.
I think I'm going either ati or vortech at some point. Just wondering if some of our vendors could chime in with what is their best selling FI product? It would be interesting to know what sells the best. Are there more ATI's then Vortech's on the street for instance? More Maggies than twin turbo setups I would assume? Maybe Tbryne or LAPD could chime in?
The kit from ECS cuts down on a lot of the trips to the parts house and custom modifications.
This might be one of the best reasons to consider the ECS Novi kit as it may well be the best designed and easiest (for a DYI'er) to install. Plus the technical support you will get from them (ECS) is second to none. The ECS Novi 2000 kit is a proven combination with a hard to beat value for what is in it.
I'll second the ECS recommendation. I have their earlier ATI kit on a forged 383, and am very pleased with it. These guys know what they're talking about, and they do the STS turbo kits also (if I remember correctly). I've taken my car there three times now, and never regretted it.
