Re: Best year Z06?

Thanks for the referred threads. Very helpful. I've had a 77 and a 67 big block. Now it is something that I can drive that is fun and safe. Ultimately want a C6Z. Wife will frown if I spend $60k right now. I am thinking the C5Z is more than half the car of a C6Z. Will be fun either way.

I'd say the '08 Z06 is the best year. But if you ask me again in 6 months, I'll probably say the '09 is better.

Re: Best year Z06?

In general, the model year that's just before the *last* year of production tends to be the "best". It'll have all the "fixes" for the previous year's issues, and might include the benefit of additional "enhancements" or refreshes GM might have done to keep the model selling well. You don't want the last year's production. The costs of the many tools required to make the car are high. GM wants to amortize those costs over as many cars as they can. They "time it" so that the last tool they ever have to buy lasts until the last car is built (they don't want a tool good for 10K parts to still have 5K of life left when the last car rolls off the line - that's wasted money). But tools don't just suddenly go bad, the slowly wear and tolerances get progressively looser until they're deemed unacceptable and replaced. The last parts that come off the tool are generally the poorest quality (doesn't mean they're "bad", only that they're not as good as the "best").

You don't want the last year production of a car. The temptation to minimize scrap often invites compromises in quality that would not have been deemed acceptable at the start of the production run.

Re: Best year Z06?

I am partial to the C6 style, so that would be either an 06, 07 or 08. 2006 models are starting to get affordable now. It comes down to how much you can afford. If you can afford a new one, I would go with the latest model year available.

Re: Best year Z06?

As a newbie to this forum, I, too appreciate any input I can get on which Z06 to buy! Thanks for info and any that is forthcoming! It is helping me a lot! I am wondering if I should wait for the 09 this June. Chevrolet is great at improving on an already good thing with the C6's!

Apology accepted, no problem. What I really should have said, was that GM and other manufacturers use marketing strategies by making changes to increase and enhance the sale of next years unit. The older I get, the wiser and more cynical I get. Just like when the 01 Z06 came out with the option of the HUD and then in 2002 it wasn't an option any more. Basically it was the same car even though the horse power was increased slightly. I guess to some guys ego's it means a lot to have it all and to others it doesn't. It's just how you see it. To me all the C6 Z06's are basically the same. What would be more important to me than upgrades would be the 5 yr/100000 mile warranty offered with the 2007 Z06, opposed to the 3 yr/36000 mile warranty in the 2006.

Thanks again for your apology.

Re: Best year Z06?

I must confess, the "best" (I should say the most exciting to drive) was the first model year 2001 C5 Z06 (385hp LS6). I didn't own one . . . I waited and bought a new '02 Z06 and was glad I did (405hp LS6). However, the introductory model year still seemed to light my fire the most just based on the thrill of driving it. There was something about the titanium exhaust system on the C5 Z06s that made them "sound" better.

You'd think the new C6 Zs with their 3" exhausts and so-called power mode, would sound even better. It does sound good, but not as good as the last Z (IMHO).

Having said that, I would NEVER go back. The "new" Z06 is an incredible car and far exceeds in overall appeal compared to the last generation of Z06s. And of course, if I were to cite one thing about the car that once again lights my fire, it would be the new "small" block 427ci LS7 engine. It is a masterpiece blend of both old and new V8 engine design and manufacturing technologies. It has literally become the best of both worlds.

I use to think the guys who owned those rare L88 classic Corvettes really had something special, and no doubt they did. Then, the new Z06 came out in 2006 with a return to the magical 427ci mill; a reincarnation of the old big block LS7 moniker of the early 1970s. Those enormously powerful big block classic Corvettes have nothing on the new Z06.

The new C6 generation monster motored Corvettes (including the soon to be available supercharged 6.2L ZR1) are the most bang for the buck on the planet!!!

Re: Best year Z06?

Hello
I'm new to this forum, usually surf CF & DC, but check this site from time to time.

So, here's what i know from researching....

1. 06 Z06 is lighter & A LOT faster than the 08 Z06 (options for options)
2. 08 Z06 has "improved steering feel" and newer TR6060 transmission, some claims its a crappy transmission.
3. 08 Z06 has revised shocks.
4. 08 Z06 interior is different (around the dash area ).
5. 08 Z06 stinks like a body shop, so some people claims.
6. Early 06 Z06 have weak half shaft because people were drag racing them by droping the clutch, later 06 Z06 - revised rear axles were used in , May and up. Another revision came after that.
7. '07 model year, and following, "upgraded" rear shock absorbers were used. These can be add for around $100.00 per pair.
8. '07 and '08s have available steering wheel radio controls.
9. '08 'OnStar standard, New console and instrument gauge pods.
10. Less sound deadening material in the '06 Z06.
11. Rocker arm problems starts production from Jan '07 Z06 to May '07 Z06 vettes.
Some guys change to Harland Sharp rockers and new springs .

All Corvettes with painted tops, made prior to August 3rd, 2006 are subject to roof delamination and the recall. Roofs produced after August 3 were manufactured with SMC material.

- Early 05's vettes has had loose crank bolt.
- 06's don't have magnetic drain plugs, but '07 does have.

Some might want to comment or add to this.
cheers,

Best year Z06? The 2009. Why? GM engineeers continually improve and tweak them.
