C6 Corvette Revealed Today!
Just received my January 5th issue of Autoweek and sure enough, the Cover photo is the C6!!!!
The article covers 8 pages with 9 color pictures (all in red).
Here are quotes from Autoweek:
On sale in the fall....LS-2, 6.0 Liter 400hp, 400 lb.ft.
curb weight 3245 pounds, 0-60 in 4.3 seconds (est.)....Base price $45,000 (est).... honest, autobahn tested 180mph top speed...it is 5 inches shorter, one inch narrower, "more graceful" says Dave Hill....sleeker, tighter, quicker, and more refined.... A C6 with Z51 option will rival this year's Z06 for performance, Hill said.....reinforced windshield frame...the Tremec 6-speed transaxle has been refined...there is a dual-mass flywheel for smoother, quieter clutch action, the gearshift lever is an inch shorter and angled toward the driver, and the travel for all synchros is reduced 10 per cent...all new shift linkage, and shfit rail bearings that contribute to a quic, more snick-snick action...base engine has a 6,500 redline.
More to come...run , don't walk to your local book store to see the C6!
Remember, you heard it here FIRST!

Here's more:
The engine is 15.4 pounds lighter than today's Gen III engine....compression ratio is up from 10.1 to 10.9....intake airflow has been improved by 30 per cent....there's a new throttle body and new composite intake manifold....stiffer valve springs and revised camshaft for more valve lift, as well as a new heavy duty timing chain...33% lighter exhaust manifold..external knock sensors, drilled main crank bearings...new oil pan and an upgraded water pump...new wingless oil pan better maintains oil pressure in extreme handling maneuvers, even while containing one less quart of oil and draining more easily for the home mechanic...the engine electronics are fullly integrated with an active handling system that will allow the driver to slide the car some, even when engaged in what GM calls the most sporting handling assist mode on the market.... the real story of the C6 will come when (Autoweek) drive it and find out how much the car's dynamic's have improved... (note, the article says they have not driven the car yet.)
B-pillars slant rearward instead of forward as on the C5.... windshield is slightly more upright, the idea here was to cut wind buffeting when the top is out.....coefficient of drag is improved to 0.28 from 0.29......re-configurable heads up (optional) display offers two modes, street & track....track version of HUD has a real time accelerometer..only the coupe will be shown in Detroit, the convetible will be shown later in the year, and the Z06 will be a 2006 model, and it will differ from the C6.

How will a dual mass flywheel help clutch action? And I wonder if they have done anything about the sticking clutch pedal?
I for one am hoping they moved the flywheel/clutch to the back of the car by the transmission instead of leaving it by the engine. If they moved it back to the back of the car it would improve the cars weight distribution, reduce the amount of mass that needs to be slowed by the synchros (which would extend syncro life and make shifting faster because you wouldn't have to wait for the torque tube mass to slow down), and get the clutch hydrolics away from the hot exhaust (which might help solve the sticky clutch problem).
Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought the C5 already has a dual mass flywheel.
I can't wait to see some detailed specifications about the driveline....
Now that we are getting some "hard" figures, I have already begun salivating again. I must say #s of 400/400, 10.9:1, 0.28, 3245, 180, and 45,000, are a HUGELY impressive combination for any "base model" Corvette.
I have trouble believe the latter (45,000), albeit an "estimate". For this much performance - just add Z51 to rival current Z06 - I would expect at least 55,000 to be the price of admission.
Remember, the current Coupe optioned with dual lift-off roof, LTPWS, and 6 speed manual transmission, HUD, multi-disc changer, polished aluminum alloy wheels . . . put the MSRP at well over $50k. Z51 might add somewhere in the neighborhood of another $350-500.
With an engine comparable to the LS6 in a coupe, I just can't believe the "entry level" price would be anywhere near $45k. If I'm wrong, Chevy is going to sell a whole bunch of the new C6 coupes. And since many of us always felt the Z06 would be a more "desirable", if not better looking car in coupe form, the 2004 C5 models are soon to become fixtures on dealers' lots. Either that, I would expect dealers to start deep discounting (even as much as 10K or more) remaining C5s very soon.
Zippy thanks for the hot scoop and congrats on being one of the first to see "the light".

More quotes from Autoweek:
The composite body, influenced by both extensive wind tunnel testing and experience from the C5R racing program, draws its design inspiration from the landmark 63 Sting Ray, even though it is the first Corvette since that second generation model to run with exposed headlights.
"By weight, more than 85% of the car is entirely new" points out Corvette's Hill.
Hydroformed rails same as on Cadillac XLR and Hill claims better structural performance thanks to a reinforced windshield frame and a crossbar mounted at the bottom of the dash.
Every single piece of the all-independent suspension has been changed to refine the performance and to engineer in the longest travel of any sports car in this segment.
The suspension cradle and control arms are all new.
13 millimeters of suspension travel was added to the front, 20 mm in the rear, and 8 degrees of caster was added for better on-center feel.
The base suspension is a FE1.
Magnetic ride control is optional and will again include a two-mode switch, touring and sport, with a greater evident difference between them.
Opt for the Z51 performance suspension and you get stiffer springs and dampers, more aggressive tires, brakes and its own gear ratios (shorter through most gears for better accelleration, with a longer fifth for high top speed).
A C6 with Z51 option will rival this year's Z06 for performance, Hill said.
The wheels are an inch bigger in diameter (18x8.5 front and 19x10 rear), and the tires are 10 mm wider than before @ 245/40 and 285/35.
Zippy,
Many Thanks for the scoop
I really like the new top speed, which should mean improved gearing in the 6 speed, and hopefully a stronger 6 speed that can be ported to a C5
