Mine is factory stock and hooked up. I see it when I start the car on the gauge cluster assy. Has anyone ever had one of these shift there tranny from 1st to 4th?
I had 3 Z06's and never had it happen yet. I keep my RPM's up over 2000 in 1-2-3 gears when on the street so maybe that's why?
Anyone had this happen please share your experience. I see where many owners have changed them out and was just curious.
When I first got my C5Z back in 2002, I had the 1st to 4th problem a couple of times in rush hour traffic. Had the CAGS eliminated through LS1 edit shortly thereafter.
On my C6Z, I had it tuned (HP tuners) and the CAGS eliminated the week I bought it.
Are you asking what it does? It won't allow you to shift into any other gear other than fourth when the ecm summons it. You can shift into any other gear after shifting into fourth. It's basicaly just an annoying electronic nanny.
You can go with a tune or the CAGS defeat to get rid of it. I like it better removed because I had to play with it once when I needed a gear in traffic. Feel better with it turned off.
I occassionally got the CAGS event when I was least expecting it in traffic situations. About the time I shifted and wanted to pull ahead of slower drivers I realized I was in 4th. I ended up adding the plug in eliminator. Problem solved
PS - My 08 owners manual shows the CAGS is activated when:
Engine temp > 169F
15 to 19 MPH
21% Throttle or less

Thanks. I guess after 3 of them (2 C5's one C6) I've been lucky because it's never shifted into 4th on me. I don't drive mine much except to run at the track for some exercise on occasion.

That's good. It sounds like you're driving it correctly.
My old C5 Z06 did the 1-4 thing all the time so I made it stop! However, on my '08, it has only happened two or three times since I bought it. I can't even make it do it.

Exactly. My 03 needed the eliminator, my 08 never does it w/ my driving style. Has only happened to me a couple of times in traffic, so no biggie.
CAGS was quite intrusive on my earlier cars (C4s and C5s), but I hardly noticed it on my new Z06. I almost have to make a deliberate effort to cause it to activate. GM must of narrowed the dynamic range. Fine by me.
However, with all my skip shift Corvettes, over the years, I developed a simple technique to effectively make it a somewhat useful function. Instead of shifting from 1st to 4th, I shift from 1st to 3rd. It is quite easy to train your brain to "reverse" the direction of the shifter in the central gate when CAGS activates. There is no restriction in shifting to 3rd instead of 4th other than you just need to "push" the gear lever forward as opposed to "pulling" it backward. This technique works very well - won't lug the engine - and quite possibly will still save a little on your gas bill at the pump.
The only caveat to this suggestion, is when you try it for the first couple times, it helps to be doing rather slow paced shifting, to develop a "feel" for what you are doing in that central gate while reversing the direction of the stick. The slower you go, the EASIER it is to master this technique.
