Hey guys. I found a screw in the right from tire on my Z06. I put in a plug, do you think this is too close to the side wall or is it a safe plug. Only 950 miles on tire
I would not drive it without as a minimum a plug from the inside.
With a tire that new, if it were me, I would replace the single tire. Not worth the risk.
Don't know if this varies by state, but here the tire repair places will not repair a hole with a plug within approx 1 1/2 " of sidewall. ... so you may not be able to get anyone to plug it from the inside.
I know ... that sux ... had the same thing happen on a DD and because they were about 60% gone, bought two new tires.

I am no expert on this but at a minimum an internal patch is needed for short term and low speed. (to get to the tire store) However, I would suck it up and buy a brand new tire because I think it's too close to the sidewall. It's not even on the scuffed part of the tire! Denny's advice seems correct to me.

if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is, or 'til you are.
Official Racer Dude Guy, according to a neighborhood 6 year old.
The shoulder of the tire experiences a signification amount of flexing, and bears the majority of the cornering loads when the tire is stressed. Patches in this region are almost certain to fail due to the flexing, and plugs are almost as certain to fail. They may hold up for a while, but don't let this lull you in to a false sense of security. It's not a question of "if" so much as "when". Sucks to have to replace a brand new tire, but you should do it anyway. If you were lucky/smart enough to pay for a road hazard warranty, given the relative newness of the tire the proration will be minimal and the new rubber won't cost you but a fraction of the new-cost you just paid...

Thanks guys. I found out these high performance tires come with a 12 month warranty including road hazzard.... that if they can not repair they will replace.
The pamplet comes with the warranty info in our booklet!
I just returned from the Goodyear store and they are ordering a replacement The rep told me most do not realize this comes with these tires. I sure did not.

I appreciate the all feedback
That's good to know, thanks for the info! It's good for you too cause that tire had to go. Too close to sidewall and too much load. Did you ever stare at a tire on the dyno at speed and watch it expand?
That sucks!! I have gone thru 2 tires in 3 weeks. One on my Silverado, hit something in the snow, blew out the side wall big enough to put my fist in the hole, that was $186 and change, then picked up a 3" lag bolt on my G6. That tire only had 1000 miles on it, but it was right in the middle of the tread, and the Goodyear store where I bought them was able to put an internal patch and plug on it and said it would not be a problem. I'm glad your's is under warranty, nice to know they are covered for a while.

ran over a knife with my L/R goodyear, was too big to fix so i got a brand new set of firehawk wide ovals. within 2 months of the new tires i got a nail in the R/R. fixed it at my shop with a patch (was right in the middle). about 2 months after that i got a nail in the L/F and had to fix that one too.
about another month after that one i got a nail in the side of my R/R, right about in the same exact spot on your tire. worked as a tech at firestone for 4 years. anything in the sidewall is too dangerous to fix for liability reasons so we dont do them. as for my R/R, i went to car quest and got a plug kit for that thing. has worked sofar to 150 mph, i will not get new tires untill the belts on these are showing.
whenever i am driving pos civics with $200 sets of tires i never get flats, when i roll with $1100 hoops i pick up nails left and right, go figgure.
if you dont want to front the money for a new tire just make sure you get a really good plug in there, those things will hold up to some sick abuse if they are installed properly. i drift the crap out of my plugged tire and have yet to see a problem, but thats not to say that its not possible that the thing might lose air again. i just check my air frequently, especially that tire.

I've got 13K on the rears of my '02, and picked up a nail close to the side wall on the right rear. I know I need to replace that one, but do I need to replace the left rear along with it? How much wear is OK when putting a new tire on the axle?

With 13k miles on the rears, I would replace both. I assume they are more than halfway worn.
Otherwise, you'll just spin in circles when you launch.
Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Being as this is your first post, may I suggest you start a new thread to ask opinions. This thread may have already run its course and you might get more responses on a new one.

Welcome to and echo what they ^^^^^ said.
If you don't replace both now, "x" k miles from now your left rear will be shot and you'll be in same situation ...
