Since I bought my car out of state, I had to pick up my title and tags at the Motor Vehicle commision as they call it here in NJ. They told me that I had to go to the inspection station to get it inspected. I was not happy to think of these guys driving my car and putting it on the rollers.
I figured that I would stop by the inspection station to see what the story was since it was on the way home from the MVC. I pulled in and told one of the guys what my story was and he said that they simply put a new car sticker on it and to wait a minute and they would be right over. Another guy then walked in right behind me with the same story. They looked at his new Cadilac which he had pulled up closer than I had and they told him he needed a front license plate. He told them the mount hadn't come with the car but it was on it's way. They told him he had to have the plate mounted before they could put a sticker on the car. The guy swore a bit and used what looked like bailing wire and wired the plate on.
I also did not have a front plate mount so I told the guy that I would have to come back when I get the mount. He told me to hold on a bit, so I did. He put the sticker on the Caddy and then told me to come along. We walked over to my car which had no plates on it at all yet and he put the sticker on. He then started to tell me how much he loves the new Z06 and how he has a 76 Corvette. We talked a while about the cars and we popped the hood on the Z06 and a few other inspectors came over to take a look. When it was time to leave they told me that in 4 years when it has to be reinspected again not to worry they will just put a sticker on it since they know that anybody with such a nice car would never let it get unsafe, and they know how hard it is to let anybody drive it.
I have taken many cars through this inspection station and they never treated me even nicely before, but the Z06 brings out the best in people. Thats why it is so nice to own a Vette.
I think this story may be an example of what sets some people off to want to key someone elses nice car... the fact that the car gets people "special treatment".
I would prefer to not get that treatment - afterall, what really makes the "Vette owner" better than the rest?
We'll another view point is not so much special treatment it is RESPECT. I don't like the special treatment either but I appreciate respect. Not every vette owner but alot are known to go to great lengths to keep their car nice and unmolested. Why not respect him. Why would you give that treatment to a person w/ a dented up dirty car. He obviously doesn't care so why should you. On the same token if you saw my older pickup truck you would know I care by it's obvious excellent clean condition. Not everyone who owns a vette is rich and a snob. I find most to be regular guys who finally got their prize and cherish it. I was just in SC on a vacation w/ the 08Z and while I was sitting eating in a restaurant I was watching my vette through the window. I watched a 20 yr old PUNK look at my car as he was entering the restaurant while he told his buddy to hold up as he took his cigarette and through it on my hood of my car!!! What did I do to deserve that??!! No one deserves that no matter what the car. It's Respect. And yes I ran out and got the cigarette off my hood and then dealt the scum### which turned into an International incident! Some people have their preconcieved notions and ENVIE which fuels them. Some people who give that treatment would want it in return if they were you and just have respect. I personally would never lean on anyones car no matter what the car ,it's not mine or my place to. It's someone elses property. If no one ever got special treatment there would still be envious a###oles keying cars.

Just another view point on the same story.
I got some special treatment from a Michigan state trooper a couple of months ago. My first ticket in many years (I never leave home without my V-1, but it doesn't do much good when you aren't paying attention on the road less traveled).
He said, "A guy like you probably doesn't care about a $100 ticket with a car like this." I said I did care, but it didn't cut much ice.

Gotta agree with you on this, last year I traveled to another plant for their refueling outage right after I got my Z. Came out after shift and found a gob of chewing tobacco on the hood. Why does someone think it's OK/funny to do this? Did I p*ss this guy off? I didn't cut anybody off or take anyone else's parking place. No one was around when I parked the car. This was the only time the car was in this parking lot at this plant. Because I like Vettes, and am willing to work the extra overtime to afford it, (28 days, 12 hour shifts away from family) it gives someone the right to do this? I don't care what you drive, it's not mine, I don't touch. You're right, envious A**HOLES will still be around.

Thats what I am refering to - some folks are just nasty pieces of work, and when they see a nice car parked way on the otherside of the parking lot, maybe taking 2 spots - instead of just being respectful of anothers roperty, they get "angy and jealous" fo rno reason - they then project this shitty view point to everyone with a nice car, then they project the hate to the object (the car) - then the anger festers and when they get a chance to "confront" the car (or the owner if thir job/posiition allwos this) they feel their anger is justified and they release it either in word or deed.
Interesting to see where your thread went, huh, Jose? I, too, have been very impressed with the NJDMV ever since they switched to that private outfit. I usually hit the one in Flemington...is that the one where you had your pleasant experience?

Mel, I will tell you which one it was when I see you but I would hate to have these guys get in trouble for discriminating or showing favoritism.
As for where the thread went... I have often noticed that some guys will interject a different understanding into what one posts which makes it look like he is highjacking the thread. It all good as far as I am concerned.
Hey Jose, just wanted to commend you on having a cool attitude about "where the thread went". I don;t think anyone here was highjacking your thread as someone implied. Just different viewpoints on the topic, pros and cons to the treatment. Great story we should all be so lucky. It is great when just a car can bring some people to a good place, and a nice converstaion that may not have otherwise happened. Drive safe Jim

There's a guy on one of the GTO forums that owns a C6 Vette, and he's had more than a couple of instances where dumb-a**es forked with it: piss, shopping cart, chew..... One such act was caught on camera at a local Wal-Mart, but the resolution was so poor, the culprits could not be identified.
