"The new C6 is also a thorough rework of an existing car. Chief engineer Dave Hill has been widely quoted as saying 85% of the C6s mass and 70 % of its part numbers are new. Whatever that means, it doesnt count for much as we rumble down Santa Monica Boulevard in the warm afteglow of another sunny LA day. We're in the new Corvette -- and nobody noticed."
"Look closer, though, and you wonder whether any other automaker in the world could get away with charging more than $45K for a car with such poorly fitted panels and a steering wheel from a Chevy Malibu. Whats more, our tester groaned and creaked like the ship in "Master and Commander" every time we drove up the angled ramps in the underground garage at the Motor Trend Towers, and the detachable roof squeaked and rattled constantly."
Consider the source. Motor Trend and Car & Driver both have their editorial noses so far up the arses of the Germans and Japanese that they are loathe to write something kind about an American made car. Screw 'em.

A 45K car that doesn't have the fit and finish of a 90k car, but can kick its ass on a road coarse (or anywhere else)? I would say; "everything I need, and nothing I don't"!

That's the only thing I will agree with but so what: that's been true on my 1992 Camaro, 1994 Vette, my wife's BMW540i, etc. etc.

I agree and disagree. Many Jap and German cars under 50G's have fit and finish are far far better than the Corvette. As long as we owner(s) (myself included) keep buying them, there is no incentive to improve. Look at the Caddy with the LS6 engine and 6 speed tranny. Its fit, finish and paint quality far exceeds that of a Corvette and its MSRP is less than Corvette.

ever seen a black caddy XLR up close?? i have... orange peel like mad... no better than a black chevy malibu.. and 120 grand (cdn.) .. couldn't believe it.....
So what if the Porsche has a better looking steering wheel. I think it time for all these "exotic" auto mfg's to have to answer why their cars cost $250,000 when any Vette has at the very least the potential to embarrass them on the street, strip or course. So what if the have smaller displacements and more cams. They are also finicky and expensive to maintain. Would I like to have a 997S or a 430? You bet! But it high time Chevy quit taking lumps for little stuff nobody would notice if it weren't written in a magazine.

This last week at the Las Vegas MotorTrend Autoshow....they had a new Bentley Continental....it was metallic silver and the paint on the hood wasnt sprayed right....it was SO obvious too.......kind of like a body shop doing a crash repair.....I would love one...dont get me wrong, but it was the biggest factory blemish I've ever seen. I would be pissed if they gave that one to me.
I thought it was a good article. I couldn't agree more with the skip shift comments, steering wheel, shifter feel, typical exterior styling. I don't feel guilty about expecting more from GM's top sports car.
Granted the Porsche is in a different $ league, but they never compromise. How many women do you see driving around in high horsepower Porsche's ?? You don't see Porsche rushing out to SMG type shifting either. (they have the boxer for that crowd)
GM can't keep taking away from the sports car concept(to broaden it's appeal, to keep costs down, to avoid gas guzzler tax, to improve drag cd., etc)
the one picture of the two cars (side view with drivers standing) really showed how Porsche stands out with it's proportions, muscularity and class. The Vette looks long (think 68' charger next to a 68' Z28)
The vette is certainly competitive in the stats but they are right about the stupid skip shift and gear ratios. Hell, I would gladly loose a few mpg. for some character.
