A lot more C6 info...(long)

All of this from the other forum.

- The coupe as a power assisted trunk closer, the 'vert does not (don't remember reason.)

- If the key transmitter battery dies the fob can be placed in the glove box to authenticate and start the car.

- If the push button door openers malfunction, then there are handles on the floor that can be used to open the doors.

- The C6 guages are much larger and brighter than C5, looks like they're using OLED (organic light emitting diodes.) (based on my experience, the engineer could not confirm.)

- The mufflers are a straight through design, no longer having the 90 degree turns like the C5 mufflers.

- Dave Hill commented that most attempts to gain power tuning the exhaust will result in less power, implying team corvette already iterated through the exhaust sizing the aftermarket will use.

- On the headlights, the lines in front of the lights are there to reduce secondary glare off of the plastic cover.

- pop-up headlights weren't an option with the shorter front bumper, there simply isn't room for the mechanisms (why didn't I think of that reason?)

- The C6 Z06 has been completed and tested last week at VIR here in Virginia (doh!) The also reportedly have been driving them late at night in Bowling Green, but not one in the know is talking.

- An engineer who worked on the Z06 C6 commented he's never been in a forced induction C6 (i.e. no turbo, blown Z06, infer what you want about the Blue Devil from that.)

- The small antenna on the trunk of convertibles are XM antennae. On the coupes they are on top of the roof. They will be painted to match. They are not needed for navigation or Onstar.

- The black wheels on the test car are not production options (just in case anyone was interested.)

- The airbag on the passenger side has no visible seam.

- The cupholders (two) are much better designed.

- The fuel release is no longer in the glovebox (big points for that.)

- The exhaust is very, very quiet (too quiet many remarked.)

- The export model has headlight washers, cross drilled rotors, several extra lights.

- The Z51 was preferred by the Corvette engineer, he was sad to let it go. Differences are as major as more agressive transmission gears.

-I asked Dave Hill point blank if they had switched to a different manufacturer for the column lock. You know, someone who will do it right this time. He said yes.

-The cost is only about $2,000 above the last year of the C5. This was revealed on a cost:performance ratio comparison chart that they displayed.

-The only things in the interior that felt cheap were the small panels at the top of each door near the hinge, and the window switches--which felt exceptionally cheap. They felt like they were made from ping pong balls; as in that same kind of plastic and just as hollow.

-The window switches, as previously reported, really do have two clicks for down. One for down and the second click for auto-down (at least, that's what I assume they do.)

-The location and shape of the C6 brake cooling ducts are superior to the C5 Z06's. They both pull from underneath the car and are shaped to get more of the air directly onto the rotor. They also reduce lift by reducing high pressure underneath the car.

-Shifter: Definitely feels more responsive with shorter throws. Felt as though 1st and 2nd were more like a Z06 tranny (and confirmed by Dave when asked).

-Torque: Sure, the C6 has 50 more HP, but the real impressive SOTP feel comes from the torque. Driving through the twisties near the museum at 65 in 4th...at one point I slowed down without downshifting, and when I came back on the throttle the response was right there

-Seats: Felt so much more solid than my '02. In fact, everthing just felt "tighter" (Doors, seats, steering wheel grip).

-HUD and Dash: Much better projection on the HUD, and my guess is that it won't get as "washed out" with extreme sunlight. Really didn't have an opportunity last night to test.

-Starter Button: I know it doesn't do anything for performance, but it was just sooooooo cool to push the button and have it rev up!

-Like I said in another thread, I still can't believe I got to drive this car and the fact that I had Dave Hill in the passenger seat made it almost surreal. I got a good long drive too...just ask Troy as he was waiting for me to come back for his drive

-The cockpit feels smaller and more intimate. The low-gloss door panels contribute to more of a C4-like feel, especially in ebony. The seats are deeper, the bolsters are better.

-The auto I drove had awesome acceleration when I floored it.. put ya back in your seat... handling felt great... although I didnt get out in the country... I had the Z51 version.. feels a little tighter than the Z to me... curves well...but yet not too stiff... just an awesome car all the way around... the inside feels great... everything is more accessible to me.. angles of the car are a little different feeling inside... and the seats feel very nice.. love the HUD and lighting on the dash.... and the HIDS.. so much better lighting than the C5.

-The dual air intakes for the engine do not have anything to interfere with the drawing of air. They are open and protected from water with baffles instead of the small holes that the C5 used. Most of the air is cold-air from the front bumper opening. The only gains to be had are to go to a 100% cold-air intake. Because restrictions are gone.

-Dave was quite clear that if you want info on the Z06, he will be very happy to share that info at the car show in January '06 (I think that's the date for info release). Point being, he an't gonna tell you squat right now. I don't blame them. They don't want to give the competition any help or a heads up.

He did repeat some things we've already heard which was that they're still trying to get to the desired HP level, but they're not there yet. Body style to have the lines of the C6 coupe but no removable roof panel.

-The C5 Coupe and 'Vert base curb weights for 2004 are 3,246 and 3,248 lbs. respectively. The C6 Coupe's base curb weight is 3,179 lbs. That's been official and on GM's site for a few months now.

Edit: Also, the C6 'Vert is listed with a curb weight of 3,199 lbs.

-Those who get the NAV get room for only one CD in the NAV system itself. Only the base radio gets a changer that you can easily reach from the driver's seat.

I am curious how did the steering response feel on the new C6?
Was it more nimble than the C5, because that is one of my biggest complaints about the C5. I wish the c5 was just a little more nimble through the twisties.
