Just received my Automobile magazine (sneak preview issue) this afternoon.
Here's what it says verbatim:
Chevrolet Corvette Z06....
WHAT: Hot-rod C6 that guns for the Dodge Viper and the Ford GT with 500hp. The extra power comes from new, three-valve cylinder heads and variable valve timing. A dry-sump system will keep working parts well lubed on the track.
More aggressive tires, brakes, and chassis tuning plus a few carbon-fiber body panels complete the picture
WHEN: Fall 2005, as an '06 model.
I wouldn't necessarily call that information new, as it's been circulating as rumor for quite awhile that GM was headed in that direction. We'll all have to wait and see what Chevy actually decides to give us next year, though.
May not be out of the question, but I'd find it easier to swallow if it was just a simple "conventional" increase in CI as I'd think that'd be a cheaper alternative (taking into considerationChevrolet put the emphasis on cheap with the LT1/LS1's) to all the hat-trick gimmicks involved with 3valve heads, variable valve timing, etc, etc.
Who knows? I'm not holding my breath for the 500hp Z06, I'm sure it'll come...but I have an '03 to enjoy for a few years while GM works their kinks out of the C6.

I wasn't bashing your post, sorry if it came off like that. I've just been following and the stories about the 3-valve variable valve-timing 500hp Z06 have just been in discussion for a couple months now. I wouldn't mind one way or the other, though. I'm sure the car will put out ~500hp numbers regardless of how GM does it, just gotta hold out a little longer until GM gives us the real taste.
Who says first year model years are no good.I'm number 13 on Rick Daniel's list and i can't wait.Sounds like very exciting stuff.Greg

Not really new news. But good to see the rumor has not changed much. Here are some photos I posted back in Dec of the possibel head setup.

I'm sorry, but does "3 valve" and "VVT" mean it's OHC ?
No in this case it does not. GM is quite proud of the fact that they have been able to marry to concept of ohv and Variable valve timing to the point where they can achieve 90% of what is achieved with ohc motors and VVT and their new three valve heads at dramatically lowered costs.
Keep in mind the majority of this new technology is for thier true money makers trucks ....
This gives both better performance and improved GAS MILEAGE so despertly (sp) needed in the truck market.
The upcoming C6 Z06 is primarily the showcase for this new technology to the public.
People who have driven the car have said..its not only the added power but also the handling and braking that make this new C6 Z06 beyond reproach..
Torched sounds like he's got his "A " ticket ride all lined up.
